Another van attack: more terror death in London

A van struck worshipers leaving a north London mosque early Monday morning, causing several casualties, local media reported.

"I can't believe it", Mr Naema, a taxi driver, said.

Osborne, a 47-year-old married father of four, was apprehended by the public and handed over to police, a move that was widely welcomed.

South Wales Police confirmed that 24 hours before the London attack it had responded to a 101 call following reports of an "insecure van" in the Llanedeyrn area of Cardiff.

Monday's attack hit a community already feeling targeted from the fallout from three previous attacks in as many months, all blamed on Islamic extremists.

One man was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident and nine other people were taken to hospital with injuries. Police are also looking into a statement made by his family that he was "troubled for a long time".

His mother, Christine Osborne, 72, told ITV News her son was a "complex" person, adding: "I'm not going to defend him but you know he's my son and it's a awful bad shock and it's not just robbing the bank, it's an atrocity".

A woman living next door to the property being searched told an AFP photographer her neighbour was Osborne, without linking him directly to the attack.

Osborne's family released a statement saying, "We are massively in shock, it's unbelievable, it still hasn't really sunk in".

Video posted on social media appears to show police and bystanders surrounding an injured person on the ground after a van ploughed into worshippers near a London mosque.

He added that his uncle was "not a racist" declaring that he had never expressed any racist views.

Another vigil is planned for Tuesday.

Locals held onto the suspect until he was detained by police and later arrested on charges of "the commission, preparation or instigation of terrorism including murder and attempted murder".

"People feel unsafe because after the terrorist attacks of London, Manchester, the increase of Islamophobia and hate crimes", he added.

"One of the things that all these terrorists share is perverse ideology that wants to divide our community - we're not going to let them".

Police confirmed one person has been arrested, with United Kingdom media reporting he was the driver of the van.

Sharif "does not remember anything" of the attack and kept asking "what was wrong".

One eyewitness who lives nearby told the BBC she saw people "shouting and screaming".
