Confederations Cup: Mexico dumps New Zealand, Cristiano Ronaldo helps Portugal beat Russian Federation

Mexico claimed their first win at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, after coming from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over New Zealand on Wednesday evening.

Guillermo Ochoa, Javier Hernandez and Carlos Vela were all missing from Osorio's bold starting XI and when New Zealand captain Chris Wood scored three minutes before half-time, it seemed a stunning upset was on the cards.

The match - played at the Fisht Stadium in Sochi, Russia - ended 2-1 leaving New Zealand at the bottom of the table with no points, meaning the All Whites are now out of the tournament.

Portugal's win took them to the top of their group ahead of Mexico's game against New Zealand moments after.

It took two second-half goals from the startled Mexicans in Sochi to avoid an enormous upset after the world No.17 ranked side trailed the 95th-ranked All Whites at halftime.

Participants in the 2017 Confederations Cup are hosts Russian Federation, 2014 FIFA World Cup Champions Germany, 2015 Copa America Champions Chile, 2015 AFC Asian Cup Champion Australia, 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup winners Mexico, 2016 UEFA Euro Cup champs Portugal, OFC (Oceania Football Confederation) Nations Cup victors New Zealand and 2017 CAF Africa Cup of Nations Champion Cameroon.

"I apologize, my words were wrong", Osorio said through an interpreter.

"Our players and myself were shouting to stop the game but there was no reaction on the side". "The game was rough, nearly violent on occasion, so I lost my temper". "That's unacceptable and why I lost my temper", he said. "So I would imagine that's part of it".

"I felt very offended and I had some insults in my direction in Spanish".

"The camera showed my reaction, but not that of their assistant".

Federation Internationale de Football Association warns Mexico over 'insulting' chants at Confederations Cup in Russia
There was also no place for promising winger Hirving Lozano , 21, who signed a six-year contract for PSV Eindhoven on Monday. That's all to say that though Mexico are certainly big favourites, they certainly shouldn't underestimate their opponents.

New Zealand had a number of clear-cut chances with Wood guilty of failing to double their lead just prior to the equaliser, while Ryan Thomas came close to rescuing a point with a late shot that cannoned back off the crossbar. The Leeds striker latches onto Clayton Lewis' delightful through pass and ruthlessly flashes it into the corner.

Aquino broke down the left flank and passed to Marco Fabian, who squared for forward Jimenez to fire home.

Oribe Peralta netted the victor 18 minutes before time and New Zealand pressed hard for an equaliser, with Ryan Thomas rattling the crossbar as the clock ticked down.

"In the second half we changed things round a bit and we had several good chances but unfortunately they did not produce any goals".
