Australia to resume airstrikes against IS targets soon

Australia on Tuesday suspended its airstrikes against Islamic State group targets in Syria as a precaution, after a USA fighter jet shot down a Syrian warplane earlier this week and Russian Federation warned the us -led coalition from flying over Syrian army positions west of the Euphrates River.

A U.S. F-15E Strike Eagle shot down an armed Iranian-built Shaheed-129 UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) advancing on coalition forces in Syria.

The official added the USA has "repositioned" its air forces in Syria in the wake of the US downing of the Russian-made Syrian jet.

The U.S. and the coalition have a base in At Tanf, Syria, close to where the Iraqi, Jordanian and Syrian borders intersect, 80 miles south of Palmyra.

In response, the U.S. Central Command issued its own statement, saying the Syrian aircraft was shot down "in collective self-defense of coalition-partnered forces".

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which include Arab and Kurdish fighters and are supported with air strikes by a US -led coalition, began an offensive two weeks ago to seize the northern city from Islamic State, which overran it in 2014.

The U.S. said it had downed the Syrian jet a day earlier after it dropped bombs near the U.S. -backed Syrian Democratic Forces conducting operations against the Islamic State group, adding that was something it would not tolerate.

Australia to resume airstrikes in Syria
And so the battle is moving inexorably towards a band of territory where the main highways linking Iraq and Syria are located. Safe havens like the town of Mayadin that are already becoming distinctly unsafe for ISIS' beleaguered remnants.

The decision came amid increasing tension between the USA and Russian Federation, which warned it would track coalition aircraft in Syria as potential "targets", and halted a military hotline with Washington.

That incident prompted the Russian ministry of defense to announce that it would suspend the de-confliction hotline with the coalition which is created to prevent any accidents in the skies over Syria.

Sunday's downing of a Syrian jet was the first time any activity by Russian or Syrian regime forces have seriously affected the anti-Daesh coalition. "We prefer to keep this channel of communication open..."

"There is a de-confliction mechanism in place with Russian forces to reduce uncertainty in this highly contested space and mitigate the chances of strategic miscalculation", the coalition statement said.

A former American ambassador to Syria says the Syrian government and its allies, including Iran, will ultimately frustrate attempts by the United States to influence Syrian matters and will drive the U.S. out of the Arab country.

In return, the USA will slowly ease away from any mention of regime change in Syria, will not interfere with Putin in Syria as long as Syria leaves Israel alone, and will not oppose a Russian naval port in Syria.

This comes less than 3 weeks after a similar incident and just days after the US shot down a Syrian fighter jet.

"Dirty wings" is a military term used to describe a plane carrying armaments.

The Australian Defense Force's name for its effort to fight ISIS is Operation OKRA.

There is no IS-controlled territory in contact with the US-backed forces at Tanf, however.

Defense Minister Marise Payne said Australian "force protection is uppermost in our minds" in deciding when to resume missions over Syria.

They are attempting to become an indispensable player in uprooting the extremists from Syria entirely.

This hope has led to numerous armed confrontations between the U.S., Iran, and Syria.

So the tensions locally are mounting between the United States and pro-regime forces; between the U.S. and the Russians; and more broadly between Washington and Tehran.
