Nasa's Kepler telescope discovers ten new 'Earth-like' planets in our galaxy

The search for Earth-like planets is in full swing as the team using the Kepler spacecraft to search distant stars for proof of orbiting planets has revealed hundreds of new candidates.

Susan Thompson, a Kepler research scientist for the SETI Institute and lead author of the new study, said the new catalog of Kepler data used sophisticated software to re-examine the light from 200,000 stars in the target area, finding about 34,000 possible "signals". "Understanding their frequency in the galaxy will help inform the design of future NASA missions to directly image another Earth".

The scientists say the data shows that about half the planets in the galaxy either have no surface or an extremely inhospitable atmosphere that is not likely to be compatible with life.

Scientists agreed that this is a boost in the hope for life elsewhere.

The findings were presented at a news conference Monday at NASA's Ames Research Center in California's Silicon Valley.

Unfortunately, we do not see Saudi Arabia becoming more stable if the crown prince carried on with his policies and strategies. The 57-year-old former crown prince and nephew of the king had always been considered next-in-line to the throne.

The newest Kepler catalog draws out 219 new planetary candidates and infers that 10 of them may be habitable - doubling the number of planetary candidates in the habitable zone of their star.

With Monday's addition of planets, the original Kepler mission now has resulted in the identificatoin of 4,043 planet candidates. "Of which, 2,335 have been verified as exoplanets".

The odds Earth is the only planet with life is becoming increasingly more unlikely. The official catalog now contains 4,034 total "candidates" - tiny blips in the data that are thought to signal the presence of a planet around a star.

The agency says it will continue looking through space in search of more planets like our own.

The researchers also found that rocky planets are often up to 75% larger than Earth, caused by these worlds consuming a small amount of hydrogen and helium that makes them balloon in size. That doesn't mean the planets have life, but some of the most basic requirements that life needs are there, upping the chances for life.

It resulted in the death of Hadas Malka, 23, a staff sergeant major, who suffered multiple stab wounds. Kushner will be accompanied by national security aide Jason Greenblatt on the trip.

The ten planets are Earth-sized and in the habitable zone of their stars. It is only 1.3 times the size of Earth.

"It implies that Earth-size planets in the habitable zone around sun-like stars are not rare", Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb, who was not part of the work, said in an email.

It's hard to know for sure, because our own sun doesn't host a mini-Neptune - unless you count the hypothesized "Planet Nine" that some scientists believe lurks at the outer edge of the solar system.
