Jon Ossoff or Karen Handel? Trump looms large in Georgia special election

That reflects the attention and energy surrounding what has become the most expensive House race in USA history as both parties vie for a key victory early in Donald Trump's presidency.

Democrats have pitched the race in this traditionally staunchly conservative, affluent district of Atlanta's suburbs as an early referendum on Trump's presidency and a possible harbinger of the party's fate in the 2018 midterms.

Almost 6,000 HRC members and supporters in Georgia's sixth congressional district are working to get out the vote and win a Republican district that voted for President Trump. In pure Trump fashion, the president tweeted attacks against Ossoff, claiming the Democratic candidate wants to raise taxes and is "weak on crime and security".

The affluent and well-educated district has elected former House Speaker Newt Gingrich; Johnny Isakson, now Georgia's senior US senator; and most recently Tom Price, who resigned in February to join Trump's administration. Republicans say that even if Ossoff wins, it would be hard to replicate the massive amount of money and outside focus for races during a normal cycle.

Karen Handel appeared on Fox & Friends to make her case to voters, while Ossoff appeared on CNN.

The race has captured national attention since the special election in March and today has been no different.

Trump calls Warmbier death a 'total disgrace'
He tells The Associated Press that "It puts us in a really precarious situation when Americans are detained" in North Korea. The funeral will be held at 9 Wyoming High School, where Warmbier was an athlete and salutatorian of his 2013 class.

Research indicates that 50 Million dollars have been spent on the race, making it the costliest Congressional race ever.

Trump barely won in the same district, topping his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton by one percentage point.

Republicans have held the seat since 1979.

A WSB-TV poll of 500 likely voters, conducted after the shooting at the Republican congressional baseball practice in Virginia last week and released Monday, showed the race too close to call. The day started with two tweets from President Donald Trump and appearances by each candidate on cable news.

Handel celebrated the early numbers with her supporters at an area hotel, saying she improved on her April primary performance.

"If we win, it will send a wakeup call to Trump that he can not do whatever he wants", said Matthew Goodman, a 22-year-old chemistry graduate.

But the judge said it was clear the child's life was in danger and found him guilty. Earlier reports incorrectly described the convicted man as the child's father.

Some political insiders say this could be a litmus test for President Donald Trump's performance so far, and the results could foreshadow what will happen in the 2018 elections.

Ossoff raised $23.6 million through May, mostly from donors in blue states, compared with $4.3 million raised by Handel, mostly from Georgia, according to Federal Election Commission filings. He has said the address is close to Emory University, where his fiancee attends medical school.

If Handel were to win, Republicans on Capitol Hill could feel they are on the right track - helping the GOP's push for health care and tax reform legislation.

Democrats across the country see Ossoff's candidacy as an opportunity to win back a seat in the Republican-dominated House. "They need to get used to the idea of no safe seats, because people are fed up".

Handel, meanwhile, hasn't fully embraced Trump, but she hasn't completely distanced herself from him either.
