Uber CEO Taking 'Undetermined' Leave From the Company

Uber CEO Taking 'Undetermined' Leave From the Company

The Chief Executive Officer of Uber, Travis Kalanick, on Tuesday said he was taking an indefinite amount of time off from the company, which is now in the throes of controversy over its hostile work culture, in particular for women.

Kalanick told employees about his decision Tuesday in a memo.

Eric Holder speaks at the 44th Annual Congressional Black Caucus legislative conference on September 26, 2014 in Washington, DC.

Kalanick's announcement comes on the same day Uber will discuss the findings from a probe into the company conducted by former attorney general Eric Holder, whose law firm Covington & Burling LLP was brought in to examine the company's culture amidst allegations of discrimination and sexual harassment. His announcement comes amid a staggering run of turmoil for Uber, and on the same day the recommendations of an global investigation into the company's culture were made available to employees.

The report also stresses the need for more focus on diversity in the workplace and said that the company should make more use of performance reviews to hold "senior leaders" accountable for discriminatory or other inappropriate workplace practices. Lawyers said the board should continue its search for a chief operating officer who is "diverse" and has a background in diversity and inclusion.

Holder also recommended adding independent directors and replacing the board chairman, co-founder Garrett Camp, with an independent person.

Holding reportedly made almost 50 recommendations in the report, and Kalanick isn't the only point of emphasis.

Uber now has no COO, CMO, CFO or president.

He also ensured that the ambulance was allowed to pass through despite traffic being stopped on the route to make way for the President's convoy.

Kalanick also emphasised on the fact that, going further, Uber 2.0 success largely depends on the management team. Women and minorities who are hired must be included and supported. It means the company must interview at least one woman and one underrepresented minority for key positions. Up until now, when new hires joined the company, they were asked to subscribe to a unique set of "values".

Holder wrote in his report that Uber should "reformulate its written cultural values because it is vital that they reflect more inclusive and positive behaviors". Created to curb inappropriate behavior, the changes include guidelines for romantic relationships between employees (including a ban on relationships between managers and their team members), policies on alcohol and drug use, and a clearer promotion process for high-performing workers. That's a change Uber has already made.

The new plan is emerging at a time of turmoil for Uber's top executives. It said romantic or intimate relationships between employees that report to each other should be prohibited.

In a company-wide email (read in full below), Kalanick said he is taking time off to grieve for his mother, who was killed in a boating accident in late May.

NOGUCHI: Ruyle says in any event, rebuilding trust and changing corporate culture can take a long time. Apparently because of distrust of some leaders, Holder recommended that care be taken to make sure the executive "is viewed positively by the employees".
