Pregnant Mom Calls 911, Seattle Police Kill Her

Charleena Lyles, 30, called police on Sunday to report a burglary at her apartment but the officers who arrived at the scene killed her because of her allegedly violent behavior.

The Seattle Times reported dozens of people attended a vigil Sunday night for Lyles demanding answers for how officers ended up killing the woman who had called police for help. Williams also said that Lyles was pregnant with a fifth child. They discuss a previous interaction Lyles had with law enforcement - and the fact that she was the subject of an "officer safety caution". "Get back!" the officers can be heard saying before loud sounds of gunshots erupt and the audio stops. "Get back!" before firing a volley shots that killed a woman who had called in a burglary.

Officers found Lyles in her apartment, armed with "extra long metal shears", threatening officers, according to the incident report.

The footage, which is from the officers' dash cam and from a camera in the hallway outside the woman's apartment, does not show the Sunday shooting.

Lyles's family believes that race played a major role in her fatal shooting.

The statement provided by the Seattle police department said both officers were "equipped with less lethal force options", and that all its officers are trained in crisis intervention. Lyles' family says the officers' actions were motivated by racism. They take down her contact information and confirm what was stolen. She was African-American, while the two officers who responded are white. King County Jail records indicate a woman by that name was booked June 5 for obstruction of a public official and harassment.

Family members are not only grieving her death, but also demanding answers.

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray called the shooting a "tragedy for all involved" and vowed transparency throughout the probe.

Officers claim that the woman, Charleena Lyles, "confronted" them with a knife upon their arrival, according to a statement from authorities.

Family members expressed surprise at her behavior while talking with cops and "has not had any behavior similar to this in the past", police wrote.

A Department of Justice investigation in 2012 found that the Seattle Police department regularly used excessive force. According to Lyles' cousin, Robin Cockerham, the officers were aware of her issues.
