Mexican journalists accuse government of spying on them through their phones

A criminal complaint filed with the Attorney General's Office on Monday by nine people follows a report by Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto which claimed that Mexican journalists, lawyers and activists were targeted by spyware. The targeted individuals include some of Mexico's most prominent journalists, the minor child of one of them, plus employees of two civil society organizations.

Among those swept up in the hacking: activists with the Miguel Agustín Pro Juárez Center for Human Rights (Centro Prodh); members of the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO); journalists working for the Mexican nonprofit Against Corruption and Impunity; and other journalists working at Aristegui Noticias, the news site run by Carmen Aristegui; and Carlos Loret de Mola, an anchor for TV network Televisa.

The software - called Pegasus - was reportedly created by Israeli cyberarms manufacturer NSO Group and sold to Mexican federal agencies under the condition that it be used to track terrorists and investigate criminals. Once clicked, the software exploited a trio of previously disclosed iOS vulnerabilities to silently install itself on the target device.

The newspaper says messages examined by forensic analysts show the software was used against government critics.

Yet Johnson was forced to bide his time for the next six holes, unable to convert the few birdie chances that came his way. And those 42 are within 6 shots of the lead held by Paul Casey, Brian Harman , Tommy Fleetwood and Brooks Koepka .

Personal and sexual taunts, fake emergency alerts and bills, and threats to physical safety are also employed as ways to break into targets' phone, according to Citizen Lab.

Authorities in Mexico are reportedly misusing surveillance technology to spy on activists and critics of the government, raising questions about the effectiveness of laws and oversight mechanisms surrounding the use of tools meant to help fight crime.

"The agents of the Mexican state, far from doing what they should be doing legally, have used our resources, our taxes, our money to commit serious crimes", she said.

"We condemn any attempt to violate the right to privacy of any person", the statement said.

The accusations of government spying come during a time of "constant violence and fear" for local reporters, according to Reporters Without Borders' 2017 World Press Freedom Index. Her 16-year-old son Emilio was also targeted, prompting her to ask: "What was the Peña Nieto government going to do with information on a young student?" "It constitutes a form of control over the flow of information and abuse of power".

Citizen Lab believes the campaign was orchestrated by the Israeli spyware vendor NSO Group, based on similarities in the code of the spyware and the host domains where it was stored.

Espionage "has become an effective tool to intimidate human rights advocates, activists and journalists", she said.

"We don't know if the journalists killed were spied on beforehand", she said.
