Southern Baptist Convention denounces 'alt-right' views

The new statement denounces "every form of racism, including the alt-right white supremacy as antithetical to the Gospel of Jesus Christ".

On Tuesday night, officials who oversaw the resolutions originally refused to introduce a different repudiation of the 'alt-right, ' the movement which emerged dramatically during the U.S. presidential election and was accused of mixing racism, white nationalism and populism.

There has arisen in the United States a growing menace to political order and justice that seeks to reignite social animosities, reverse improvements in race relations, divide our people, and foment hatred, classism, and ethnic cleansing... this toxic menace, self-identified among some of its chief proponents as "White Nationalism" and the "Alt-Right", must be opposed for the totalitarian impulses, xenophobic biases, and bigoted ideologies that infect the minds and actions of its violent disciples.

On Tuesday, resolutions committee chairman Barrett Duke told Southern Baptists gathered there that the resolution contained language that was "inappropriate" for an official SBC statement and did not define precisely who is a member of the alt-right, according to the Baptist Press. Yet still, McKissic said he was grateful for the outcry from both Black and white Christians who thought it important that the SBC publicly denounce white supremacy.

A revised version of the resolution ultimately passed, but only after considerable internal and outside pressure forced the denomination's president to step in.

Police said he was already receiving first aid when the attack unfolded. "This was an attack on London and all Londoners". On May 22, a suicide attack killed 22 people and injured almost 60 after an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester .

Several Southern Baptists were panicked, contending that silence would be misinterpreted as support for white supremacy.

But some African-American faith leaders across the country were quick to condemn the new resolution, noting that William McKissic, the black pastor who submitted the first resolution, was not consulted on the second. The controversy illustrates the continued clash among evangelicals over President Donald Trump and the more radical, white nationalistic branch of his supporters.

Some opponents of the resolution asserted that the SBC had previously denounced racism.

Charles Hedman of Capitol Hill Baptist Church also spoke in favor of the resolution and urged the committee "not to accept any resolutions, or amendments to the resolution rather, that would weaken this resolution in any way".

I think it's significant that they had the reputation historically of being one of the most militant mosques in London . And then the guy came out of his van and I got him. "Basically, a van swerved into them deliberately", Versi said.

In an emergency late-night call, the participants of the convention returned to the assembly hall and Steve Gaines, the president of the Southern Baptist Convention, won approval to consider a new resolution on the topic Wednesday.

The SBC, which is now the largest Protestant denomination in the USA with 15.2 million members, has seen its membership decline for the 10th straight year.

Christine Wicker is a religious writer and researcher and told WFAA TV the decision comes as many Southern Baptists deal with an identity crisis.

The Southern Baptist North American Mission Board co-hosted with Laurie an evangelistic crusade June 11 at the University of Phoenix stadium in Glendale that attracted 38,000 attendees. White Evangelicals strongly supported Trump, including Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr., who called him the "dream president" for evangelicals, pointing to his Supreme Court nomination and economic and immigration policies.

But there was to be more resolution intrigue and drama: A resolution condemning the racial prejudices and white nationalism that undergirded Trumpism failed in committee.

One killed in London mosque attack
The Muslim Council tweeted that worshippers were struck by a van as they were leaving prayers near the Finsbury Park mosque . Scotland Yard said the man who died was already being treated having fallen ill before the incident unfolded.

McKissic said Wednesday that black evangelicals were still processing how the convention handled the issue of white supremacy, but he acknowledged that the vote "might help to mitigate some of the hurt and some of the pain". "We believe that we are all together in the gospel as Southern Baptists, and we want to do everything we can to eliminate" barriers and any racism that exists.
