Deadly mosque attack in London treated as terrorism

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's World At One, Mr Wallace said: "What I can say on this case is this individual, so far as we know at the moment, was not known to us, but we are aware of a rise in the far right".

One man died and 10 people were injured after a van drove into a crowd of Muslim worshippers near a mosque in London in the early hours of Monday.

The Finsbury Park Mosque gained notoriety more than a decade ago for sermons by radical cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri, who was sentenced to life in a United States prison in January 2015 for his conviction on terrorism-related charges.

Imam Mohammed Mahmoud, of the Muslim Welfare House, has been hailed a hero for stepping in to protect the suspected attacker, a 48-year-old man, telling the furious mob: "Do not touch him".

The chairman of the Finsbury Park Mosque says the van crash that hit worshippers was a "cowardly attack" and urged Muslims going to mosques to be vigilant.

Earlier this month, three knife-wielding Islamist attackers unleashed a terror rampage in the British capital, plowing a van into pedestrians on the London Bridge before stabbing revellers in a nearby market, killing seven people.

Videos from the scene posted on Twitter showed crowds of people surrounding a police van that apparently held the driver of the van.

The collision near Finsbury Park Mosque which has been described as "a deliberate attack" by witnesses has been condemned.

British Prime Minister Theresa May said police had confirmed the incident was being treated as a potential terrorist attack and said she would chair an emergency response meeting later on Monday.

Five people were killed in the attack. He will be given a mental health evaluation.

- London Mayor Sadiq Khan called the incident "a horrific terrorist attack".

The use of a vehicle to mow down pedestrians drew horrifying parallels with the London Bridge attack, when three men drove a van into pedestrians before embarking on a stabbing spree, as well as with another auto and knife rampage in Westminster in March.

"I saw so many of them crying, screaming, trying to get the police and the ambulance", she said.

'We call it a terrorist attack as we called it in Manchester, Westminster and London Bridge'.

Several bunches of flowers had been deposited outside the mosque as commuters went to work on Monday morning. It appears from eyewitness accounts that the perpetrator was motivated by Islamophobia.

"He's a killer. he killed a lot of people".

Numerous victims are believed to have just left evening prayers after breaking the Ramadan fast.

He noted that the attack happened during Ramadan - a holy month on the Islamic calendar that is marked by prayer and fasting - and said the council "expects the authorities to increase security outside of mosques as a matter of urgency".
