Wind howling as final round at Erin Hills gets under way

Wind howling as final round at Erin Hills gets under way

Former Alabama golfer Justin Thomas is your clubhouse leader at the 117th U.S. Open following a record round on Saturday.

South Korea's Kim Si-Woo is one back on nine under, just ahead of Patrick Reed, Charley Hoffman and Russell Henley on eight under.

Don't try this at home. Fowler his been putting marvelously all week.

It didn't work all that well.

Fleetwood punched onto the green on what was his par-5 shot, then putted in for a six. Rickie Fowler is at 10 under.

But come on Johnny, don't get too bitter about it. On No. 7 he sank a 15-footer.

Justin Thomas put on a show during the third round of the U.S. Open at Erin Hills.

On her 21st nomination, costume designer Jane Greenwood (" The Little Foxes ") finally won her first competitive Tony. Rebecca Taichman was a surprise upset in the best director category, which she won for the show " Indecent ".

After three days of benign conditions which have led to a feast of low-scoring, the arrival of strong gusts at Erin Hills suggested the challenging course could finally bare its teeth today.

It was a fitting end to a frustrating day for Spieth at the U.S. Open.

It's also important to note that there hasn't been a playoff in the last eight U.S. Opens. His best finish was a tie for 37th a year ago at Oakmont.

The 2009 British Open victor made his first appearance at the U.S. Open in three years, having secured a qualifying spot at the Columbus, Ohio, sectional.

Thomas reiterated that multiple times after his round, a jaunt in which he recorded nine birdies, including thre consecutive to finsh his front nine and one on No. 17 to give him momentum into the final hole.

Casey, Koepka, Harman and Fleetwood have yet to tee off. And he's giving the fans something to cheer. But the wind hasn't kicked up over three rounds, and overnight rains have kept things soft, allowing shots to hit the green and hold, the way Thomas' 3-wood did from 310 yards out on the 18th hole. The only disappointment was a three-putt bogey from 35 feet on the final hole. The greens are ideal and the fairways are wide at Erin Hills. He just has to listen to the crowd. "This went totally against the tradition of the U.S. Open". But, obviously, his 67 with six birdies and one bogey, was a pretty good round. "To have a chance tomorrow is just going to be great", said Thomas. Both are in a second place tie with Thomas - all three are at an 11-under 205 for the tournament.

Amateur Scottie Scheffler is playing with the poise of a veteran at the U.S. Open. It took him until the 11th hole on Day 2 to finally hit a bogey, but he managed to not let the tournament get away from him and finished one over on the day. Champ tees off later Saturday. His first-round 73 included a triple-bogey on the par-4 eighth hole and left him on the cut line.

Thomas lights up Erin Hills
Open - one fewer than the number who had done it over the first 116 years of what had been known as the toughest test in golf . Open will begin with the top 16 places on the leaderboard all occupied by players who have yet to win a major.

Low scores were available. Not everyone can take advantage. Going into the final round, 42 players were still under par. At that point, he was leading by seven shots.

A U.S. Open short on big names and a leaderboard that at times seemed like a phonebook of random people found a bright star Saturday under a partially cloudy sky at Erin Hills.

Not bad for a guy who made the cut on the number.

The 24-year-old stormed to the top of the leaderboard at Erin Hills with an astonishing nine-under-par round.

The U.S. Open is wide open going into the weekend.

But that's not all that makes the possibilities so limitless Saturday. The diminutive Harman has been getting every last drop out of his game this week and will be the first to tell you he's played the game with a chip on his shoulder for a long time.

So, with that in mind, here's a quick rundown of Brian Harman, the man looking to convert his first 54-hole lead in a major into his first major victory...
