Steve Scalise has more surgery as authorities track shooter's path

Steve Scalise, the third-ranking House Republican shot Wednesday on a Virginia baseball field outside Washington, remains in critical condition but has a chance for an "excellent recovery", the chief trauma doctor at a Washington hospital said Friday.

"The Congressman will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time." the Medstar Washington Hospital Center said in a statement, adding that Scalise has "improved in the last 24 hours". "We have controlled the bleeding and his vital signs have stabilized". The bullet that struck Scalise tore through his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs and causing severe bleeding, the hospital said.

"I feel a lot more confident and a lot more optimistic than I did two, three days ago", Dr. Sava said at a press conference.

Scalise was shot in the hip while practicing for the Congressional baseball game on Wednesday morning.

Several lawmakers and analysts have suggested the shooting could be politically-motivated given the shooter's leftist rants on social media, and called on all lawmakers support each other after the indident.

1 killed, 11 hurt by explosion at Colombia mall
Bogota has seen dramatic improvement in security over the past decade as the country's long-running conflict has wound down. The Andino commercial center was packed with people flocking to buy gifts ahead of Father's Day celebrations on Sunday.

It came the morning after Scalise was honored at the charity baseball game where he was supposed to play second base for the House Republican team.

President Donald Trump then made a statement on the giant screen.

"The congressman's status remains critical", Dr. Sava.

The crowd started clapping and chanting United States of America after the first pitch was thrown by injured Capitol Police Officer David Bailey, one of the two officers on the congressman's security detail who've been credited with saving his life and potentially many others.

Scalise should be able to walk again, Sava said.

Real Madrid demand £78m for Alvaro Morata
Manchester United have made their first move in the summer transfer window by trying to sign Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata . Despite starting less, Morata was Real Madrid's second-highest goal scorer only behind Cristiano Ronaldo .

Capitol Police, who provided security for the practice, killed the shooter, identified by authorities as James Hodgkinson, 66, from Belleville, Ill. Richmond, who plays for the Democratic team, said he had visited the hospital multiple times. The rifle blast left possibly hundreds of bullet fragments that the doctor said will not likely be removed.

Predicting when the congressman would be released from the hospital was hard, the doctor said, adding that "he will require a period of healing and of rehabilitation".

"I was surprised by some of the reports also", Sava said.

The wife of wounded GOP congressman Steve Scalise says she is thankful for all the prayers and warm wishes her family has received since her husband was shot at a baseball practice.

"Our family asks that you continue to pray for Steve, Matt Mika, Zach Barth, and all of those hurt in this attack, and keep them in your thoughts as they face recovery".
