Jonny Hayes swaps Aberdeen for Celtic

The 29-year-old Dubliner Jonny Hayes has moved to Celtic after five years with Scottish side Aberdeen.

Celtic midfielder Ryan Christie has joined Aberdeen on a season-long loan as part of the deal that took Hayes to Celtic Park.

Hayes, capped four times by Ireland, has been one of the most standout performers in the Scottish top-flight over the last few seasons and was the only non-Celtic player nominated for the 2016/17 SFA player of the year award.

However, while Celtic were pleased to get the deal over the line it is unlikely that Hayes will be joined at the club with Patrick Roberts.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is a very good coach, and working under the former Liverpool and Swansea City boss is only going to make the winger a better player. "It was hard previous year seeing all the celebrations and all the stuff on social media and you want that for yourself and to be part of it", said Hayes to the Celtic website.

He opened the scoring against Celtic in the Scottish Cup final last month before the Hoops won 2-1.

"You can't get away from the Champions League", he said.

City are understood to want a buy back clause inserted into any deal they may make, which is what Barcelona and Real Madrid do with youth players. Not only is it the size and the stature of the club, Champions League nights and the atmosphere are a massive factor in wanting to come here. He joined the club on a free transfer from Inverness in 2012, making almost 200 appearances and scoring 30 goals for the Dons.
