Trump mocks Federal Bureau of Investigation for failing to prove 'Russian Collusion'

The new tweets are the latest in a week of angry social media responses from the president over a report by the Washington Post that Mr Mueller was looking into whether Mr Trump obstructed justice.

It wasn't clear whether the President was basing his tweet on direct knowledge that he is under investigation, or on reports this week that special counsel Robert Mueller is examining whether the President obstructed justice by firing Mr. Comey in May 2017 amid the ongoing Russian Federation investigation.

Dan Coats, the Director of National Intelligence, Mike Rogers, the head of the National Security Agency, and Richard Ledgett, the former Deputy Director at the NSA, had agreed to be interviewed by Mueller's investigators as early as this week, the Washington Post said, citing anonymous sources. Comey was sacked by the president on May 9 while he was overseeing the investigation into potential Russian interference into last year's election and potential collusion with the Trump presidential campaign.

The Washington Post said the decision by Mr Mueller to investigate President Trump's own conduct is a major turning point in the investigation, which until recently focused on the Russian angle.

During congressional testimony last week, Comey stated under oath the President was not under investigation by the FBI prior to or after his firing.

Days after that happened, Trump told NBC News' Lester Holt that the Russian Federation investigation played a role in his decision to terminate him, and he has dismissed the probe as "fake news".

Today, in another series of furious tweets, it seems Trump has inadvertently confirmed this news.

Until recently the investigation was focused exclusively on Russia's meddling and possible collusion with the Trump campaign during the 2016 election.

Mr Trump was not under investigation before Mr Comey's firing, but reportedly is now facing scrutiny for obstruction of justice over the circumstances surrounding the ex-FBI chief's sacking, according to U.S. media.

Trump's Friday tweet was the first official confirmation that he is being investigated by the special counsel over the reasons he fired Comey last month.

Mr Trump's legal team responded angrily to the report that he is being personally investigated saying: "The FBI leak of information regarding the resident is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal". "Witch Hunt", he tweeted.

Senior US intelligence officials have agreed to be interviewed by investigators working for Robert Mueller, a respected former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief, according to reports in both The Washington Post and New York Times.
