China Steps Up Security at Education Facilities After Deadly Kindergarten Blast

At least eight people were killed and 65 injured, including eight seriously, according to authorities.

Preliminary investigations by police suggest it was a criminal offence and a suspect has been targeted, according to official Chinese news agency, Xinhua.

The explosion occurred at approximately 4:50 p.m. on Thursday afternoon outside the main gate of Chuangxin Kindergarten in Feng County, around 120 kilometers northwest of the city of Xuzhou.

Police officials said they are investigating and had no word yet on injuries or deaths.

Investigators say Xu had left school because of an automatic nervous system disorder. In one of those pictures, women and children could be seen lying on the ground looking terrified.

No children or teachers were among the casualties as they were still in the class when the explosion happened.

Graphic images on social media purportedly showed the scene with adults and children lying on the ground.

Police identified the suspect as Xu, a local resident of Quanshan District, Xuzhou of Jiangsu Province.

Photos and videos from the scene show people covered in blood outside the kindergarten building.

The shop owner said his daughter also attended the school yesterday and was later taken home safely by her grandfather.

Attacks on kindergartens in China have happened before, usually by people who are mentally ill or who seek retaliation against employers or society.

The Fengxian blast is the second tragedy to strike a Chinese kindergarten in recent weeks.

In January a year ago, a man armed with a kitchen knife stabbed and wounded 10 children in a schoolyard in Haikou, southern China's Hainan province.

In May, a school bus packed with kindergarten pupils erupted in flames inside a tunnel in eastern Shandong province, killing 11 children, a teacher and the driver.

A year ago itself, a knife-wielding assailant injured 7 students outside a primary school in a northern city of China.
