Brexit: Germany prepared for negotiations with Britain, says Angela Merkel

Then in April the next Conservative prime minister, Theresa May, called an early election that she hoped would give her a bigger majority in parliament and a stronger negotiating position in the Brexit talks.

Jean-Claude Juncker, head of the European Commission, said he wanted discussions to proceed without delay, while Michel Barnier, the EU's chief negotiator for Brexit, said "negotiations should start when United Kingdom is ready".

"We want to negotiate quickly, we want to stick to the time plan, and so at this point I don't think there is anything to suggest these negotiations can not start as was agreed".

The spokesperson said that "The Prime Minister confirmed her intention for Brexit talks to begin as planned in the next couple of weeks, and that we would be looking for a reciprocal agreement on the rights of European Union citizens and British citizens overseas at an early stage", according to (The Sun).

British voters failed to deliver a widely expected parliamentary majority for the Conservative party in Thursday's general election, dealing a major blow to Prime Minister Theresa May just days ahead of hard Brexit talks with the EU. "But obviously while also asserting the interests of the 27 member states that will make up the European Union in future", she underlined.

She added that Britain will still remain in Europe after Brexit, and that she wanted the country to remain a good partner.

Angela Merkel made her first comment since Britain PM Theresa May's Conservative party lost 13 seats.

"Our shared responsibility and urgent task now is to conduct the negotiations on the UK's withdrawal from the European Union in the best possible spirit, securing the least disruptive outcome for our citizens, businesses and countries after March 2019", he said.

The talks were set to officially begin on June 19. "Do your best to avoid a "no deal" as result of "no negotiations".

But Brussels' chief negotiator Michel Barnier appeared to take a less hard-line approach than Mr Tusk when he said Brexit talks could wait until the new government was ready. "We know when they must end", said Mr Tusk.

Guy Verhofstadt, the European Parliament's Brexit co-ordinator, described the election result as "yet another own goal" for the UK. But the prime minister said her new government would now prepare for discussions in 10 days time.
