UK Conservatives need to deliver an "open" Brexit - Scotland leader

The Scottish National party is facing a possible huge electoral setback, with broadcasters' exit polling suggesting it has lost about 20 of its 54 seats in Scotland.

Thursday's surprise election result in Britain came as a severe setback for one of the most powerful women in the nation, and one of Prime Minister Theresa May's strongest opponents, as Nicola Sturgeon's Scottish National Party lost about a third of its parliamentary seats.

In the effort to fend off the dreaded indyref2, they have dismissed Brexit as if it matters scarcely at all, and is certainly not important enough to justify the First Minister's mention of a second independence referendum.

What does it mean for Scottish independence?

Former SNP leader Salmond said that wasn't the case and attributed the loss of SNP seats to a late surge in support for Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. No one, not even unionist party managers, believed that the SNP would lose 21 seats at this election.

Ms Sturgeon said later on Twitter she was "proud that the SNP won the election in Scotland with more MPs than all other parties combined".

And, with that, it became apparent that even the best of Cleveland's efforts would not be enough. "Give them a ton of credit". That's just to cool your roll on blaming the officiating crew of Mike Callahan, Marc Davis and John Goble.

After the count, he tweeted: 'Scotland's capital officially a Tory free zone.' The SNP retained three of the four city seats it held, but lost Edinburgh West to the Lib Dems, while Labour held Edinburgh South.

However, on her referendum plans, she added she would not "rush to judgments or to decisions".

Reflecting on the overall British results, Davidson said her Conservative Party needed to take account of their losses: "It is incumbent on us to listen to other parties in Parliament, and people outside it, about the best way forward".

Writing on Twitter, Ms Davidson said the claim was " b****cks". Their support collapsed following Margaret Thatcher's closure of heavy industry and they haven't won more than a single seat since.

A spokesman for Ms Davidson said she was "fully supportive" of Mrs May and that the pair had exchanged text messages in the morning, when the result of the election was clear.

The SNP appeared to have suffered a backlash against Ms Sturgeon's plans for a second independence referendum, although it was set to remain the largest party in Scotland. "But I've always said - the SNP would want to be part of a progressive alternative to a Tory government, but there's a number of seats still to be declared".

"Her position I think is very, very hard".

"I think everybody had written us off and what we've got is six fantastic Labour MPs joining Ian Murray in the House of Commons, she said".

"We also have to listen to voters who did not give the UK (Conservative) party the mandate it sought".

Public polls showed no post-Brexit independence surge, and private polling showed that even yes voters were nervous about yet another vote after local, Scottish and United Kingdom elections and European and independence referendums.

She tweeted that she fought a leadership campaign opposing the idea of a separate organisation in Scotland.
