United Kingdom voters prioritize security in wake of attacks

British voters went to the polls Thursday for an election envisioned to be dominated by the country's pending departure from the European Union but that ended up focusing on worldwide terrorism following attacks in London and Manchester.

Polls opened at 7:00am and will close at 10:00pm. But many voters said they had only just decided whom to vote for, and the decision had not come easily.

Asked what would constitute success, the 60-year-old vicar's daughter said: "I never predict election results". But in an unusual appearance on Good Morning Britain, Mr Duncan Smith cited lyrics from Eminem's hit Lose Yourself to poke fun at Labour's Diane Abbott and her grasp of figures.

Prime Minister Theresa May called the snap election seven weeks ago in hopes of increasing the Conservative Party's slim majority in Parliament and strengthening her hand in negotiating Britain's exit from the EU.

Perhaps thanks to Corbyn's underdog status and May's missteps on the campaign trail, that remarkable lead has now evaporated.

UK contenders trade blows on final day of election campaign
In case they narrow it to less than 326, no party will have the ruling majority, which may result in a hung parliament situation. The Corby parliamentary constituency has been hotly contested by the two main parties, changing hands five times since 1983.

"[Corbyn] has been running a kind of Bernie Sanders-esque campaign, looking for a lot more funding for the National Health Service, which has really suffered".

The gap between the Conservatives and the Labour Party led by veteran left-winger Jeremy Corbyn began to narrow after May announced a policy on elderly care that proved unpopular. Britain's Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn speaks at an event in Runcorn, England, Wednesday June 7, 2017, ahead of the general election on Thursday.

Issues of world-historical import bear down on British voters - and the election has had nearly nothing to say about them.

"I can only build that better country and get the right deal in Brussels with the support of the British people, " she said. "I don't know how to feel".

If she retains or bolsters that majority, she will stay on as Prime Minister (though losing seats could make her position as Conservative Party leader unstable). Estimating the number of seats is far harder than estimating raw votes.

Michelle Obama outs Barack as an outfit repeater
Barack Obama and Michelle Obama wait for the arrival of German Chancellor Angela Merkel before a state dinner in June 2011. The relatable former first lady also shared the story behind the photo of her fixing her husband's bow tie.

That didn't deter some voters from enthusiastically supporting the Labor Party in the hope it could defy the odds. I do like Corbyn as a person but I think she is a bit stronger than him. "It was about the hurt, the anger of people who felt let down over years", he said. They will also be responsible for spearheading at least two years of lengthy divorce negotiations with Britain's European neighbors which are due to begin on June 19 and likely to be fraught.

There was only one point of agreement between May and Corbyn, which was that the strongest signal that Britons could send to show they were not cowed by the recent spate of attacks would be to go out and vote. She smiled at reporters and greeted them with an upbeat "hello", but remained tight-lipped otherwise about how she felt the votes would fall. He gave reporters a thumbs-up as he left the polling station.

"It is going to be very tight", she said. However the Scottish National Party, which has called for a new independence vote after Brexit, again looks set to dominate north of the English border.

In a frequently ill-tempered campaign, there was light relief as thousands of voters brought their pooches to the polling stations, posting their pictures on Twitter using the hashtag #dogsatpollingstations.
