Trump, after House Panel Subpoenas, Backs Inquiry Into Obama Administration

Another senior committee aide said any subpoenas related to the unmasking issue would have been sent by committee Chairman Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., who recused himself from the Russian Federation investigation after being criticized for being too close to the White House.

Nunes in April recused himself from the committee's Russian Federation investigation after having come under fire for his decision to go to the White House grounds and look at classified information that suggested the Trump transition team may have been under indirect surveillance.

Ed Markey, a Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told CNN: "Nunes is too close to the Trump White House".

Trump has been trying to manufacture a scandal surrounding the Obama administration's "unmasking", or revealing identities of United States of America citizens in intelligence reports, since early March, when he went on a tweetstorm recklessly accusing Obama of wiretapping him.

The names of American citizens who are caught up in incidental surveillance are protected by law, with very few exceptions granted to unmask them, even within classified material.

The news comes at an awkward time for Trump and Nunes, who have accused the Obama administration of using the same practice, called "unmasking", to spy on Republican political campaigns.

He was also not interested in focusing on the demoralising defeat against India at the same venue a couple of days ago. He felt that England would be under more pressure than Bangladesh going into the tournament opener.

President Donald Trump seized Nunes' subpoenas as an opportunity to tweet that the Obama administration had committed wrongdoing.

Nunes hasn't "fully honored" his commitment not to be involved in the investigation, Schiff said.

The House Intelligence Committee issued subpoenas to former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn and President Donald Trump's personal attorney Michael Cohen, as part of the probe into Russia's alleged meddling in the 2016 election. Nunes had issued three subpoenas in relation to whether intelligence authorities improperly revealed Trump officials in surveillance reports.

Schiff said the unmasking subpoenas are a part of an attempt to shift focus from the Russian Federation probe. Jared Kushner, President Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser, is under scrutiny in the FBI's investigation, fired FBI Director James Comey will testify before Congress next week about a conversation he had in which the president asked him to drop the FBI's investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

Nunes' subpoenas focus on the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the CIA and the National Security Agency - the same three agencies he and Schiff contacted in March to ask for an accounting of which USA residents' identities normally obfuscated in foreign surveillance reports had been disclosed, and why.

"He does. I don't think that he should, given that he has stepped aside or recused himself", Schiff said Sunday on ABC's "This Week".

Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee Devin Nunes.

Nunes responded on Twitter, saying: "Seeing a lot of fake news from media elites and others who have no interest in violations of Americans' civil liberties via unmaskings".

Nunes's visit to CIA headquarters to review intelligence related to Russian Federation, rankled Democrats who said he was violating the spirit of his recusal. The GOP staffer, who was not authorized to discuss the issue publicly and spoke only on condition of anonymity, said the chairman has the authority to sign off on subpoenas and that all the committee rules were followed.
