Their albums documenting this style became emblematic of the Southern rock and roll tradition, and signatures such as "Whipping Post", "Statesboro Blues", "Ramblin' Man" and "Midnight Rider", many written or co-written by Allman, remain rock-radio fixtures today. Gregg began collaborating with his brother Duane Allman in the early 1960s, eventually forming a band that would change the face of rock" n "roll and American music.

Allman died due to liver cancer complications at his home in Savannah, Georgia, and he was "surrounded by his family and friends", Michael Lehman, Allman's longtime manager and close friend, told CNN.

A month before that report, Allman canceled several shows that would have taken place next month, and confirmed that he would not be touring in 2017, but did not specify any reason for the cancellations. He announced August 5 that he was "under his doctor's care at the Mayo Clinic" due to "serious health issues".
