WaPost: Russians Might Get US Diplomatic Compounds Back

Chairman Tom Perez on Wednesday attacked President Trump over reports his administration may return two Russian compounds in the US that were seized by former President Obama as a punishment for election meddling.

In April, the Trump Administration told the Russians it would consider turning the properties back over to them if Moscow would lift its freeze, imposed in 2014 in retaliation for United States sanctions related to Ukraine, on construction of a new USA consulate on a certain parcel of land in St Petersburg. Soon after, the US changed its position, and Tillerson told Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov that the administration would not tie the return of the compounds to the consulate, according to people with knowledge of the discussion.

29 that the compounds were being "used by Russian personnel for intelligence-related purposes", and gave Russia 24 hours to vacate them.

According to the Post, the Trump administration is considering putting restrictions on the properties if they are handed over, including removing diplomatic immunity, which would allow US law enforcement to enter the properties.

Senior Tillerson adviser R. C. Hammond said that "the USA and Russian Federation have reached no agreements".

For Russia, these include returning the compounds in NY and Maryland.

"The US and Russian Federation have reached no agreements", says a State Department official, per NBC News.

The erstwhile USSR transferred the ownership of the Maryland property to the Russian Federation in 1995 for one dollar. On May 10 Tillerson escorted Lavrov and Kislyak to the Oval Office for a meeting with President Trump. Officials from the two countries will meet again in June in St. Petersburg.

Earlier on Twitter, Schiff wrote that Trump "should not return properties Russians used for espionage that were shuttered after they interfered in our election".

"In Washington, the USA side said that in the near future it will hand over proposals to us on how to settle the situation", she said, the state-owned TASS newswire reported. That could be seen as evidence that Trump is so beholden to Russian Federation that the political cost doesn't matter.

Asking then-FBI Director James Comey to back off on the investigation into Flynn's potential crimes, then firing him, appear to be clear cases of obstruction of justice by the president himself.

The U.S. wants an end to Russian harassment of American diplomats and resolution of a dispute over the U.S. consulate in Russia's second-largest city. He reportedly told the Russians, "I faced great pressure because of Russia". In exchange, the USA wants Russian Federation to stop harassing its diplomats in the country and clear up a consulate dispute in St. Petersburg.
