Trump says US opting out of Paris climate change accord

A person familiar with Trump's thinking said the President was convinced he needed to withdraw from the pact, and there was little chance of talking him out of it.

Trump said though that he was open to renegotiating the deal, or creating a new agreement, "on terms that are fair to the United States, its businesses, its workers, its people, its taxpayers".

Trump, who reportedly was undecided as recently as last evening, ultimately listened to ignored the voices of energy industry giants like ExxonMobil and Shell, coal company Cloud Peak, and Rex Tillerson, his own secretary of state, not to mention some of his most trusted advisors, daughter Ivanka Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Only two other countries, Syria and Nicaragua, are not part of the Paris agreement-Nicaragua because it objected to the voluntary nature of the commitments.

"I was elected by voters of Pittsburgh, not Paris". These days, China emits more Carbon dioxide overall than the United States, though U.S. citizens still are responsible for more than twice as much Carbon dioxide per capita - the most of anyone in the world. "And they won't be", Trump added.

That means the countries that accepted the Paris agreement pushed by President Barack Obama include Libya, Iran and even North Korea, all now better examples for our children on how to handle the catastrophic consequences of climate change than the United States.

America's worldwide allies and Mr Trump's domestic opponents lashed out yesterday at media reports that he had made up his mind to pull the USA out of the global accord to curb carbon emissions, a move that would make the deal less effective.

President Trump will withdraw U.S. from Paris climate agreement
While traveling overseas last week, Trump was repeatedly pressed to stay in the deal by European leaders and the pope. It was a pointed reference to a 2012 tweet by Mr.

Jonathan Aikenbaum, Greenpeace Israel campaigner, accused Trump of "taking his administration in the opposite direction of the rest of the world".

"We deem the momentum generated in Paris in December 2015 irreversible and we firmly believe that the Paris Agreement can not be renegotiated, since it is a vital instrument for our planet, societies and economies", said French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni in a statement.

Opponents of the move say it threatens to isolate the United States in a global effort to curb the warming of the planet, and leaves an opening for countries like China to fill the leadership void. The president has also been known to change his mind on major decisions at the last minute.

Ironically (or intentionally) it will take four years for the U.S. to fully withdraw from the Paris Agreement.

Under the Paris framework, the USA voluntarily committed to reducing greenhouse emissions 26-28 percent and contributing $3 billion to help developing combat climate change. Only China exceeds it.

"One by one we are keeping the promises I made during my run for president", Trump said.

Seven months after officially joining the Paris agreement, the United States will now abandon the landmark climate change initiative it helped spearhead.

But the targets were voluntary, meaning the USA and the almost 200 other nations in the agreement could alter their commitments. Even if the terms and benchmarks of the deal were nonbinding, they anxious some would try to legally demand the U.S.do more.

We recognize the peril climate change poses to the health, prosperity, security and the very survival of our children and grandchildren.

Trump can not technically pull the USA from the agreement until November 2019 but there are ways round that commitment if he so wished to.

Past year was the warmest since records began in the 19th century, as global average temperatures continued a rise dating back decades that scientists attribute to greenhouse gases.

There is ample evidence from climate scientists, including those at NASA and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, showing that the effects of climate change are already being felt, Katherine Moore Powell, a climate ecologist at The Field Museum in Chicago, said in a statement emailed to Live Science.

"Weighing in from the business community [might] have a bigger impact on Trump", he said. They could pursue a formal withdrawal, which could take three to four years to complete, or they could exit the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which describes how countries should set up climate change agreements, such as the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement, according to Axios.

The Republican vowed during the campaign to "cancel" the Paris deal within 100 days of becoming president on January 20, part of an effort to bolster United States oil and coal industries. The US is the world's second largest emitter of greenhouse gases, after China.

In a statement backed by all 28 European Union states, the European Union and China were poised to commit to full implementation of the agreement, officials said.
