Trump expected to leave climate deal but with 'caveats'

United States President Donald Trump has chose to withdraw from the Paris climate accord, Axios news outlet reported on Wednesday (May 31), citing two unidentified sources with direct knowledge of the decision.

And Sweden's Climate Minister Isabella Lovin says "it would be deeply regrettable" if the United States decides to pull out of a landmark global climate agreement, adding "it is also contrary to what we expect from the USA leadership when humanity faces major challenges".

But the official said there may be "caveats in the language" the president uses to announce the withdrawal, leaving open the possibility that the decision is not final.

The accord, agreed on by almost 200 countries in Paris, aims to limit planetary warming in part by slashing carbon dioxide and other emissions from the burning of fossil fuels.

As NPR's Christopher Joyce recently reported, emissions in the USA have declined by about 12 percent since 2005.

Axios wrote about this small team who is working on the retirement process, including the head of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Scott Pruitt.

WaPost: Russians Might Get US Diplomatic Compounds Back
The erstwhile USSR transferred the ownership of the Maryland property to the Russian Federation in 1995 for one dollar. That could be seen as evidence that Trump is so beholden to Russian Federation that the political cost doesn't matter.

An American pullout from the 196-nation Paris Agreement would deal a major blow to the so-called "climate diplomacy" which, less than 18 months ago, celebrated the historic pact made possible by a hard-fought agreement between Beijing and Washington, under president Barack Obama's leadership.

In a statement backed by all 28 EU states, the European Union and China will commit to full implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement, EU and Chinese officials said.

Trump claimed before taking office that climate change was a "hoax" created by the Chinese to hurt the USA economy, an assertion that stands in defiance of broad scientific consensus.

After the meetings concluded, the U.S. refused to sign onto a statement of support for the Paris accord that all other G7 participants approved.

Conservative groups and Republican officials intensified their efforts to get Trump to withdraw from Paris in the past week.

Worldwide leaders began reacting to the reports of Trump's plans.

Hillary Clinton blames 'anti-American forces' for 2016 election loss
The last time Clinton was at the Javits Center in Manhattan was November 2016 after losing to President Donald Trump . She called it "totally incomprehensible". "I mean, it was bankrupt ", she said during a conference in California.

Germany, France and other leading nations have expressed frustration with Mr Trump's stance on climate change. "Staying in would result in United States of America taxpayers and consumers paying hundreds of billions of dollars in higher taxes and higher energy costs exclusively for the benefit of crony capitalists in the "renewable" energy industry and Third World dictators".

Trump said he will deliver a decision regarding United States participation in the Paris accords in a "few days".

"Advisory councils simply provide advice and attending does not mean that I agree with actions by the Administration", Musk said on Twitter at the time.

Romney, a former governor of MA, also joins Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in favoring the US staying in the agreement.

"Whoever becomes the next United Kingdom prime minister, they must now step up on climate action and show that our "special relationship" with the U.S. can not extend to supporting a nation that would so flippantly jeopardise the climate for future generations", he said. The companies said it would reduce competitive imbalances for USA companies, expand the market for innovative clean technology and reduce business risks posed by future negative climate impacts.

The US is the second worst emitter of carbon dioxide in the world, according to the European Commission's emissions database, behind only China. Even Pope Francis, who met with Trump at the Vatican, urged the president to take climate change seriously and gave him a copy of his papal encyclical on climate change.
