The prestigious Palme d'Or went to Ruben Östlund for his new film The Square, starring Elisabeth Moss. The film's satire and exploration of moral dilemmas culminated in one of the festival's most eye-catching scenes.

"They are real heroes who saved many lives", he said, his voice breaking. "It's clever. It's witty".

On May 28, Sofia Coppola won the Best Director prize for her film The Beguiled at the Cannes Film Festival in France.

Earlier at the Cannes Film Festival, Hollywood star Nicole Kidman also took aim at sexism in the movie industry.

The director of Julieta and All About My Mother said the festival was "the birth of a lot of wonderful movies" and that he had been "completely mesmerised" by some of the films in competition. The Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev won the jury prize for Loveless. Coppola's film The Beguiled is set to be released in theaters on June 23 and it's a female-driven movie about how a women's boarding school is affected by the arrival of an injured Civil War soldier. Three female filmmakers have movies among the 19 in competition this year for Cannes' highest honour, the Palme d'Or. The last time a woman won was when Yuliya Solntseva won in 1961 for her film The Story of the Flaming Years.

Similarly, Diane Kruger's first German-language production (Fatih Akin's In The Fade) was deemed the Jury's Best Actress prize. In the drama, she played a German woman whose son and Turkish husband are killed in a bomb attack.

Alonso was a factor in Sunday's 500 until, of course, his Honda engine expired on the front straightaway on Lap 180. Alonso was running seventh when he suffered an apparent engine failure on the frontstretch.

Hailed as a "powerhouse performance" by Variety magazine, Kruger said the role had taken a huge emotional toll. To those "who have to go on living" after losing someone, she said, "please know you are not forgotten".

Phoenix wore sneakers on stage as he collected the prize. Louboutin looked dapper in a black suit teamed with black and white patent leather shoes.

Meanwhile, Robin Campillo's 120 Beats Per Minute was named the Grand Prize victor, and the Jury Prize went to Andrey Zvyagintsev for Loveless. It's clear that Coppola is an accomplished director in her own right, and her award recognizes this.

Podium finish at Monaco delights Ricciardo
It's the little things like that that mean I can't ever see the novelty of Monaco wearing off on race week. That was really the only opportunity to get third place back but he actually hit the wall.

The film was a deeply personal project for director Robin Campillo, who was himself an activist in the French branch of the group that helped shame the world into action. The film's docu-drama retelling of that painful period, combined with a burgeoning spirit of unity for the gay community, earned it some of the best reviews of the festival.

Nicole said she was "absolutely devastated" to miss the ceremony, having already left the French Riviera town after a week of red carpet appearances and screenings.

Fake crying, he said in French, "merci beaucoup madames et monsieurs".
