Putin warns against 'intimidation' after North Korea missile launch

In the statement on Monday, the UN Security Council stressed on the importance of North Korea "immediately showing honest commitment to denuclearization through concrete action".

Council members demanded that North Korea not to conduct further nuclear and ballistic missiles tests.

The UN Security Council was weighing its response to the latest launch, with diplomats saying that the United States was pushing for a toughly-worded statement of condemnation.

The radar of an advanced US missile defense system in South Korea detected the launch of a North Korean ballistic missile two days ago, South Korea's defense minister told lawmakers on Tuesday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday condemned North Korea's "dangerous" missile test but warned against "intimidating" the rogue regime and called for a peaceful solution in the region.

The North has made no secret of its quest to develop a missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead to the continental United States - something President Donald Trump has vowed "won't happen".

North Korea appears to be edging closer to developing a long-range nuclear missile capable of reaching the USA following a successful weapons test on 13 May which caused alarm across the world.

In April the North put dozens of missiles on show at a giant military parade through the streets of Pyongyang, including one that appeared to be the type of device launched on Sunday.

Some experts said the missile, which was launched at a high angle, would have the same reach as an intercontinental ballistic missile if it were fired at a 30 to 45-degree angle.

The test is also an immediate challenge to South Korea's new president, Moon Jae-in, a liberal elected last week who expressed a desire to reach out to North Korea.

The initial assessment by USA intelligence is that the missile launched by North Korea was a KN-17, a medium range ballistic missile, according to two US officials.

British Airways Says Resumes Flights From Gatwick and Heathrow
Bloom later tweeted , "9 hours after checking in at Belfast airport we get home after the chaos of the British Airways IT crash". Displays showing flight times had the words "please wait" next to flights instead of information about delays or cancellations.

North Korea has maintained that the missile test was in response to the nuclear dangers and threats posed by the US and its allies. Spokesman Moon Sang Gyun said it is still unlikely that North Korea has re-entry technology, which would return a warhead safely back into the atmosphere.

Leader "Kim Jong-Un has stepped up testing compared to his father and grandfather, and it is starting to pay off", Melissa Hanham of the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in California told AFP. It said the newly developed Hwasong-12 flew as high as 2,111 kilometers (1,310 miles) before landing in a targeted area in the ocean about 787 kilometers (490 miles) from the launch site.

The White House, in a statement, said North Korea has been "a flagrant menace for far too long".

A closed-door emergency Council session was set for tomorrow.

"We consider [the missile test] counter-productive, harmful and risky", Putin said.
