British Airways disruption continues for third day after IT system crash

British Airways says it is operating a full service out of Gatwick and a full long-haul service out of Heathrow today, following a worldwide computer system crash.

In a statement, BA said its IT systems were moving "closer to full operational capacity". Some short-haul flights would be canceled.

BA said on Twitter it would run a full schedule at London's Gatwick on Monday and meant to operate a full long-haul schedule from Heathrow along with a high proportion of short-haul service. "We apologise again to customers for the frustration and inconvenience they are experiencing and thank them for their continued patience".

BA site advised that all British Airways passengers who were due to fly yesterday should check the status of their flights, via Heathrow.com, BA.com and British Airways' Twitter account, prior to travelling to the airport.

The GMB union, which had cautioned past year against outsourcing jobs, said BA laid off hundreds of IT staff outsourcing the work to India, and blamed cost cutting for the travel chaos.

Experts predict the knock-on effect could continue for several days and BA is facing huge compensation costs, with reports suggesting the bill could top £100 million.

Customers displaced by flight cancellations can claim up to £200 a day for a room (based on two people sharing), £50 for transport between the hotel and airport, and £25 a day per adult for meals and refreshments.

There were no cancellations at Gatwick but some passengers experienced delays.

All the affected passengers were corralled through a single gate so they could go back through border checks and then re-book flights.

While other airlines have been hit by computer problems, the scale and length of BA's troubles were unusual.

The airline said it was making good progress in restoring flights after Saturday's computer system failure, but still had to cancel over a third of its Heathrow flights on Sunday.

Chief executive Alex Cruz, denying that this was a ransomware attack, said, "We believe the root cause was a power-supply issue and we have no evidence of any cyber attack".

Passengers scheduled to travel on flights on Monday have been told they can get a refund for their ticket, even if is scheduled to run, as have those expecting to get short-haul flights on Tuesday.

British Airways cancelled all Saturday afternoon and evening departures from Heathrow and Gatwick following what it called a "very severe disruption" worldwide to computer systems handling check-in, baggage sorting and reservations.
