British Airways Cancels Flights After Computer Failure

The airline apologised and said it was refunding and rebooking customers.

"Many of our IT systems are back up today", BA Chairman and Chief Executive Alex Cruz said in a video posted on Twitter.

According to an expert, BA's technical failure over the bank holiday weekend could affect up to 300,000 customers. We are aiming to operate the majority of services from Heathrow and a near normal schedule at Gatwick.

Passengers were asked to contact BA to locate their luggage, after many were forced to leave Heathrow without claiming their bags in chaotic scenes that saw queues snaking out of the airports.

On Sunday morning, Welsh worldwide table tennis player Chloe Thomas, whose 7.30am flight from Heathrow to Germany for the World Table Tennis Championship in Düsseldorf was cancelled at the last minute, described chaotic scenes.

A union official, meanwhile, blamed BA cost cutting for the travel chaos, saying the airline had laid off hundreds of IT staff past year and outsourced the work to India.

Mick Rix, GMB national officer for aviation, said:"This could have all been avoided".
