BA travelers face third day of delays, cancellations

LONDON, May 29 (Reuters) - British Airways was operating most of its flights from London's two largest airports on Monday after a computer system failure stranded thousands of passengers over a holiday weekend and turned into a public relations disaster.

On Saturday night, travelers spent the night sleeping on terminal floors at Heathrow on yoga mats provided by BA.

"As our IT systems move closer to full operational capacity, we will again run a full schedule at Gatwick on Monday and intend to operate a full long-haul schedule and a high proportion of our short-haul programme at Heathrow", a spokeswoman said.

The boss of British Airways has apologised for a "catastrophic" IT failure which caused chaos for thousands of travellers, but insisted it was down to a "power surge" rather than outsourcing of jobs.

They were supposed to play the Golden State Warriors there, and they will, deciding the league title for a third consecutive year. He also led the Celtics to the Eastern Conference Finals before the squad lost in five games to the Cleveland Cavaliers .

Some British media suggested Monday that BA could be hit with a bill for compensation costs of more than £100 million (115 million euros, $128 million). Customers displaced by flight cancellations can claim up to 200 pounds a day for a room, 50 pounds for transport between the hotel and airport, and 25 pounds a day per adult for meals and refreshments, the BBC reported.

However, the airports advised passengers to check the status of their flights before travelling.

In a video statement, Cruz apologized, saying "I know this has been a frightful time for customers".

The IT outage had a knock-on effect on BA services around the world, while passengers who did get moving on the limited number of flights to take off from the United Kingdom reported arriving at their destinations without their luggage. "BA in 2016 made hundreds of dedicated and loyal IT staff redundant and outsourced the work to India", Mick Rix, GMB National Officer for Aviation, said. They added: "The third-party support providers are generally quite inexperienced meaning it makes a situation like this hard to recover". Experts warned the knock-on effects could continue for several days.

North Korea threat: Mattis says war with isolated nation would be 'catastrophic'
North Korea is still thought to be several years from its goal of being able to target USA mainland cities with nuclear ICBMs. North Korea test fired a short-range ballistic missile early this morning that landed in the sea off its east coast.

He said there was no evidence of a cyber attack and denied a union claim that the outsourcing of IT work to India had played a part in the failure.

"Because of the numbers of people here customers are not being admitted into Terminal 5 until 90 minutes before their flight's scheduled departure", he said, adding that passengers who decided not to fly would be able to rebook for dates until the end of November or receive a full refund.

The airline says that it hopes to operate a "near normal schedule" at Gatwick and the "majority of services" from Heathrow on Sunday.
