BA flights disrupted for third day after IT crash

BA flights disrupted for third day after IT crash

A total of 115 British Airways flights, or 13 per cent of services, were cancelled by 3.30pm United Kingdom time on Sunday while 311 services, or 35 per cent, were delayed, according to Flight Aware, a Houston-based plane-tracking service.

British Airways said Sunday it was recovering from a technology failure, but the carrier was still hobbled by the cancellation and delays of hundreds flights at London's airports during a holiday weekend flights.

All flights operated from Gatwick on Sunday but more than a third of services from Heathrow - mostly to short-haul destinations - were cancelled.

Under EU law customers whose flights were delayed or cancelled are entitled to assistance and compensation, if the disruption was within the airline's control.

BA cancelled all its flights out of Heathrow and Gatwick on Saturday after the IT failure, which shut down all of the carrier's check-in and operational systems and affected call centres and its website. Anyone travelling after that time has been instructed to check their flight status before coming to the increasingly congested airports.

Heathrow authorities, however, said they expected further delays and cancellations.

BA said although some of its IT systems have returned, "there will be some knock-on disruption to our schedules as aircraft and crews are out of position around the world".

The airline blamed the outage on a power-supply problem on a weekend with a Monday that is a spring bank holiday in England and Memorial Day in the U.S.

In 2016, an electrical fault at the headquarters of American airline Delta grounded more than 1,500 flights.

Terminals at Heathrow and Gatwick became jammed with angry passengers, with BA staff unable to help as they had no access to their computers.

"All the parties involved around this particular event have not been involved with any type of outsourcing in any foreign country", Chief Executive Alex Cruz told Sky News.

An airline spokeswoman said, per Press Association: "We have operated a full schedule at Gatwick today on Sunday".

All the three departures from Dubai to London Heathrow were cancelled on Sunday.

According to Cruz, numerous airline's IT systems were back on Sunday "and my colleagues across the airline are working very hard to build back our flight programme and get as many of our customers as possible away on their travels".

"Passengers looking to re-book flights should go to ba.com", the airport stated.

"It is extremely frustrating", said Tonda Sallee, an American passenger trying to fly to Frankfurt, Germany.
