As White House defends Kushner, experts question his back-channel move

Kushner, 36, a real estate developer with no previous government experience, had at least three previously undisclosed contacts with the Russian ambassador to the United States during and after the 2016 presidential campaign, seven current and former USA officials have told Reuters.

"It's both normal, in my opinion, and acceptable", he said on ABC's "This Week" programme. They said any secret communications could have left Kushner vulnerable to manipulation by Russian officials. Reports also say that Kushner proposed that a secret communications channel could be set up between the Trump transition team and Russian Federation.

Kushner, senior presidential adviser Steve Bannon, and White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus could lead the team, the reports said.

"It is my opinion that numerous leaks coming out of the White House are fabricated lies made up by the #FakeNews media", Trump tweeted.

- The president is back in his element, it would seem, now that he has returned to Washington D.C. and has fired up the ol' Twitter.

But there was nothing but plaudits for the player in Luis Enrique's final news conference. Well, when attached to the left foot of Messi , you're usually guaranteed goals .

In the days that followed, Trump allegedly made several snarky remarks about Kushner's family, the Times reported citing two aides.

Rep. Ted Lieu on Sunday ribbed White House Senior Aide Jared Kushner for allegedly attempting to set up a private communication channel between Russian Federation and Donald Trump's transition team.

Rep. Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House intelligence committee, said Sunday on ABC that U.S. officials need to get to the bottom of the allegations against Kushner, including if Kushner was not honest about his Russian Federation contacts during the security clearance process.

"I do think there ought to be a review of his security clearance to find out whether he was truthful, whether he was candid", Schiff said. The newspaper cited anonymous USA officials who were briefed on intelligence reports on intercepted Russian communications.

Mr Kushner initially had come to the attention of FBI investigators previous year as they began scrutinising former national security adviser Michael Flynn's connections with Russian officials, two sources told Reuters.

"I know Jared. He's a great guy, decent guy", Kelly told NBC News' "Meet the Press". "So, generally speaking, about back-channel communications, what that allows you to do is to communicate in a discreet manner".

The Kushner revelations also could deepen the Administration's woes as congressional investigators and newly named special counsel Robert Mueller probe his contacts.

'I'm not so sure the email that Comey relied upon was fake, but I can tell you this, he never briefed the Congress, the Judiciary Committee, about any fake email, ' Graham said. While the President says it is "ahead of schedule", Congress can not act on a tax package until lawmakers finish action on health care overhaul. The Democratic National Committee quickly called for the Trump to fire him from his White House post, and some of his colleagues in the West Wing have questioned whether he can survive politically. The White House has denied that Press Secretary Sean Spicer will be pushed out, but his job security has been the subject of roller coaster rumors for the past four months; we could see more of Sarah Sanders at briefings.

More recently, the Obama Administration opened a secret line of communication with Cuba in an effort to secure the release of political prisoners and move towards a normalised diplomatic relationships. More attorneys with deep experience in Washington investigations are expected to be added, along with crisis communication experts, to help the White House in the weeks ahead.
