US plans first ICBM defence test

Donald Trump's department of defence will carry out a first-of-its-kind missile interception test on Tuesday, with plans to shoot down a custom intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

G7 leaders today described North Korea's recent nuclear and missile tests as a grave threat and said they were ready to take new measures to contain it. That was during the Cold War when the Soviet Union was the only major worry.

Earlier in the day, Washington send its third aircraft carrier, the USS Nimitz, to the Western Pacific Ocean to join previously deployed the USS Carl Vinson and the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carriers due to the North Korean nuclear crisis, according to media reports.

While Pyongyang is some years away from mastering the techniques required for a successful ICBM launch, North Korea's leader, Kim Jong-un, has vowed to develop a nuclear-armed missile capable of striking American territory.

Mississippi boy found dead after kidnapped in running car
District Attorney Michael Guest said the three suspects will be charged as adults for the killing of a child during a kidnapping. When Kingston's mother came out of the store, she alerted a nearby sheriff's deputy that her vehicle was missing.

The exercise will check the performance of the Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) system, which has had a checkered record in previous tests.

Top North Korean officials have said the country was ready for nuclear attacks in the event of U.S. military aggression.

"I've been trying to tell our government that it's really time that we go talk to them", former Los Alamos National Laboratory director Siegfried Hecker said Thursday night before speaking about his new book, "Doomed to Cooperate" at the National Atomic Testing Museum in Las Vegas.

The interceptor system has been in place since 2004, but it has never been used in combat or fully tested. There now are 32 interceptors in silos at Fort Greely in Alaska and four at Vandenberg, north of Los Angeles. The Pentagon says it will have eight more, for a total of 44, by the end of this year.

G-7 source: United States gets more time for climate pact answer
Trump tweeted earlier in the day that he would make a final decision next week on whether to withdraw from the climate pact. Mr Trump, who once dismissed global warming as a "hoax", has previously threatened to pull out of the accord.

Now, it has grown into a multi-billion dollar programme, with the Pentagon proposing to spend $7.9bn (£6.17bn) on missile defence in its 2018 budget. Other elements of that effort include the Patriot created to shoot down short-range ballistic missiles and the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, which the US has installed in South Korea as defense against medium-range North Korean missiles.

The Trump administration has yet to announce its intentions on missile defence.

According to analysts the test gave North Korea critical information on developing a re-entry vehicle for nuclear warheads and showed Pyongyang had a missile capable of striking the US territory of Guam.
