British Airways cancels all flights from Gatwick and Heathrow

British Airways is aiming to operate a "near normal" schedule at Gatwick Airport and the majority of its flights from Heathrow tonight, after an IT failure caused chaos for its weekend flights.

Heathrow Airport officials said they were working with British Airways, which is based in the airport's Terminal 5, "following an issue with their IT system this morning that has caused some delays for passengers". It urged passengers not to go to the airports.

The global outage has also affected the airline's call centers. "We are extremely sorry for the inconvenience this is causing our customers during this busy holiday period".

Cruz, the chief executive, said a power supply problem is believed to have triggered the crisis.

The airline posted a statement on its website on Sunday saying "although some of the IT systems have returned, there will be some knock-on disruption to our schedules as aircraft and crews are out of position around the world".

BA said terminals at Heathrow and Gatwick became extremely congested and it was cancelling all flights from the airports.

BA passengers were hit with severe delays in July and September 2016 because of problems with the airline's online check-in systems.

British Airways has not outlined how many flights were canceled Saturday, nor how many people were affected. BA said it expects London-bound flights to land as scheduled on Sunday, but thousands of travellers are stranded at the two major airports.

Travelers in the United Kingdom were already reporting disruptions, including baggage and flight delays, when the airline reported serious computer problems around midday.

Another traveler, PR executive Melissa Davis, said her BA plane was held for more than 90 minutes on the tarmac at Heathrow on a flight arriving from Belfast.

There are "thousands of people there with no idea where their bags are or what to do", she said.

"BA staff were slow on announcements and updates, and were bringing out cordons and bottles of water to manage queues", Ebenezer said. "BritishAirways Captain describes IT problem as "catastrophic" Other stuck passengers passed the time sharing photos and video of disorder in the terminals".

A union official, meanwhile, blamed BA cost cutting for the travel chaos, saying the airline had laid off hundreds of IT staff past year and outsourced the work to India.

After the recent outages, outside experts have questioned whether airlines have enough redundancy in their huge, complex IT systems and test them frequently enough. "Have been stuck in a plane for 1 hour, and now at the airport for 2".
