Macron unshaken by Trump power grip

On Thursday in Brussels - ahead of a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit - Trump and newly-elected French president Emmanuel Macron sat down for a talk and a handshake.

The not-so-subtle power play may be read as a show of support for Merkel, after Trump previously refused to shake hands with her when they first met, according to The Telegraph.

"No hasty decision should be taken on this subject by the United States. our collective responsibility is to ensure that this commitment remains a global commitment." he added.

President Macron and President Trump also discussed the Syrian crisis, counter-terrorism and defence spending over lunch at the U.S. ambassador's residence in Brussels, their first meeting since Macron was elected on May 7 after a turbulent campaign.

Moody's Downgrades China For First Time Since 1989
Moody's said that the outlook for the country's financial strength will worsen, with debt rising and economic growth slowing. Efforts by regulators in recent weeks to clamp down on risky debt in the country's financial system has unsettled investors.

Afterward, at a news conference, the French president said that in his talk with Trump, he "reiterated the importance" of the landmark climate accord.

During the awkward footage, President Trump appears to drag the Frenchman close, while Mr Macron pulls back.

In scenes that could have come straight out of a school classroom, Trump can be seen slapping his hand on the arm of Prime Minister of Montenegro Duško Marković before shoving him out of the way.

According to the official, Trump told Macron "you were my guy" in the election when the two met Thursday.

He seems to be headed in Trump's direction, but when the American president extends a hand, Macron turns to hug Merkel instead.

Each man gripped each other's right hand so firmly that their knuckles turned white and their jaws seemed to clench.

France's leader continued to ignore a waiting Trump by choosing to next greet Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. The poor prime minister of Montenegro, a country with less people than El Paso, Texas, learned this the hard way when Trump gave him a big shove on Thursday to get to the front of a pack of world leaders.

After describing his meeting with Merkel in Washington in March as "GREAT", Trump the following day launched a diatribe against Germany, accusing it of owing "vast sums of money" to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and the US.

A few days before the election, he had predicted that the attack on the Champs-Elysees in Paris, that was claimed by the Jihadist Islamic State (IS), would have far-reaching repercussions and would "probably help" Mrs Le Pen because "she is the strongest on the borders".
