After trip's final day, Trump to return to tumult at home

Forceful face-to-face talks this week with fellow world leaders left President Donald Trump "more knowledgeable" and with "evolving" views about the global climate accord he's threatened to abandon, a top White House official said Friday.

On the first day of a two-day meeting of the G7 leaders at Taormina in Sicily, the host, Paolo Gentiloni, the Italian prime minister, said that the USA leader had yet to be convinced not to back out of the Paris Accord, which seeks to limit greenhouse gas emissions.

'There is one open question, which is the USA position on the Paris climate accords.

Regardless of what he does, there is growing global agreement that the world's biggest economies must abandon fossil fuels, and from business groups to civil society, that demand has been amplified and directed towards the other G7 leaders.

Trump's pending review of USA climate policies has left environmentalists bracing for the possibility of bland G-7 promises that say little after years of increasingly stronger commitments to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and cut greenhouse gas emissions.

If Trump manages to avoid taking a stance at the G7 meeting this weekend, his team will most likely try to settle the issue ahead of the G20 meeting in July.

President Trump has taken an offensive approach in Europe, scolding some of the most loyal allies of the United States for not paying their fair share toward defense spending as North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members. "If countries like the USA renege on their obligations, the G7 must move forward without them". But Germany, for instance, has been increasing its defense spending with the goal of reaching the 2 percent target by 2024. Kushner's lawyer said he will cooperate with investigators. And then there's President Trump.

In addition to climate, the peaceful demonstration will spotlight the problems of a globalized economy as well as Trump's policies on immigration. Even if Trump keeps the the Paris global warming agreement, it will nearly certainly fail. And some are starting to question the chances for Trump's pledge to overhaul the USA tax code.

After the G-7 summit of economically advanced countries, the president will address American troops on an Italian base before departing for home.

Later, as they took the traditional "family photo" group shot, the heads of state quietly kept their distance from Trump, who minutes earlier was caught on video appearing to push the prime minister of Montenegro out of the way to get to his spot.

He faced a far cooler reception in Europe, where he has gone on the offensive, including an extraordinary scolding of some of the United States' closest allies.

Trump took part in the ceremonial spectacle of the summit over the two days, this time at a picturesque Sicilian town above the Mediterranean Sea. The meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel came a day after Trump reportedly called Germans "bad".

Trump is wrapping up his first trip overseas as president and returning to the US on Saturday. The G-7 countries are: Canada, France, Italy, Japan, Germany, the United States and the UK. "He's interested to hear what the G7 leaders have to say about climate", said Cohn, speaking aboard the presidential Air Force One.
