Trump wants ME peace 'compromise' but admits won't be easy

Trump had held talks with Israeli Prime Minister benjamin Netanyahu on Monday and met him again on Tuesday after a visit to the West Bank for a one-hour meeting with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

President Donald Trump's trip to Israel was presented as a test of his ability to make the ultimate deal, but it's serving to underscoring just how hard it is to strike a peace accord between Israelis and Palestinians. Trump arrived in Bethlehem by motorcade, crossing a checkpoint at Israel's controversial separation wall, and was greeted by Abbas and other dignitaries outside the city's presidential palace. "This is the time, 50 years on from the Six Day War, to shake off the heavy burden of millions of Palestinians and ensure the continued existence of the State of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state and homeland of the Jewish people for generations", he said, vowing his party's political support for peace talks.

Abbas said he was keen to "keep the door open to dialogue with our Israeli neighbors".

The sparring came a day after Trump, in his visit, stressed a unique opportunity for Israel to make peace with the Palestinians and Arab world. And could he succeed where others have failed?

Don't they deserve the peace and justice they have been yearning for and were denied for more than half a century? Abbas reiterated his call for a two-state solution to the conflict, including a Palestinian state with east Jerusalem as its capital. He said that peace could not be achieved in the region if terror continues to plague the country, referring to the recent wave of terror attacks in Jerusalem's Old City.

Trump will meet Pope Francis, with whom he has clashed repeatedly, today morning at the Vatican. What he didn't say, however, was just as meaningful as what he did: No announcement of fresh peace talks, no specifics on the way forward, no comment on the competing claims to Jerusalem, no mention of a Palestinian state.

"I think it's a choice to not create political difficulties for Netanyahu early in this process because of the strong opinions against a two-state solution in his cabinet", said former US ambassador to Israel Daniel Shapiro, who met recently with Trump's advisers.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: Both sides will face tough decisions.

To Israelis, the Western Wall is more than just a religious place; it's also a national site.

First The Swat, Now The Hair Tuck. Melania Trump Does It Again
The alleys and passageways of Jerusalem's ancient Old City, which Trump visited later in the day, were essentially under lockdown. Rove said it was smart for the President to reassure the Saudi's that the last 8 years are over and a new chapter has begun.

During his election campaign, Trump also advocated breaking with decades of precedent and moving the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, alarming Palestinians. "I commend the president and call upon Christians throughout the United States to pray for God's continued blessing on this important journey, especially as he visits the State of Israel".

The president continued his lengthy overseas trip today, ending his stay in Israel and a visit to the West Bank. He was not accompanied by any Israeli leaders during the visit.

It later annexed east Jerusalem in a move never recognised by the global community and claims the entire city as its capital. It undermines the realization of a two-state solution.

On Monday, Trump flew from Saudi Arabia to Israel.
