US First Lady brushes off Trump's extended hand on Israel visit

U.S. President Donald Trump travelled in a high-security convoy to Bethlehem in the Israeli-occupied West Bank on Tuesday to discuss Middle East peace with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Trump said in a speech to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee conference in March 2016 that he would move the United States of America embassy to Jerusalem, calling it "the eternal capital of the Jewish people".

Trump ad libbed less in his joint press conference with Netanyahu.

In return, Netanyahu extolled the USA president's leadership.

In the nearby Jewish Quarter, barriers had been erected to make viewing the square impossible from ground level, and some residents said they had been told not to go onto their roofs overlooking the Western Wall.

Dr. Mitchell Bard is the author/editor of 24 books including the 2017 edition of Myths and Facts: A Guide to the Arab-Israeli Conflict, The Arab Lobby, and the novel After Anatevka: Tevye in Palestine. The display wasn't entirely spontaneous: Israeli media reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made attendance mandatory for all government ministers.

We can not stand a moment longer for the slaughter of innocent people", Trump said. 'Intelligence cooperation is terrific . Palestinians stepped up security on Tuesday across Bethlehem as the West Bank town prepared for the visit of U.S.

As the two leaders left, Netanyahu reiterated that intelligence sharing was "terrific", before adding, "And it's never been better". -Israeli intelligence cooperation is "terrific".

Have Trump's domestic troubles pursued him overseas?

The moment was an abrupt interruption of an otherwise warm and smooth welcome for Trump to the Holy Land.

Instead of talking peace, which was supposed to be the whole point of his visit, Trump took a page out of his visit in Saudi Arabia over the weekend, and instead played up the U.S. and Israel being united in their hostility toward Iran, a position which obviously plays well with Israel's far-right government, but again offers little of substance.

The two-day visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories forms part of Trump's first foreign trip as U.S. president.

The White House has said it doesn't expect any sort of breakthrough on the peace process on this trip. Still, Trump's unconventional approach to diplomacy has raised hopes that he may be well positioned to jump-start talks bogged down by entrenched interests and ancient enmity.

Trump has vowed to do whatever necessary to broker peace between Israel and the Palestinians, dubbing a peace accord "the ultimate deal".

She and Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of the opposition Labour Party, agreed to suspend campaigning ahead of the June 8 election . It was not immediately clear if police were including the attacker among the 22 people reported to have died.

"It won't be simple", Netanyahu said.

Trump and Abbas have now come out of their meeting and are giving a statement.

At an airport greeting ceremony, Israeli Cabinet Minister Naftali Bennett, leader of the religious nationalist Jewish Home Party, asked Trump to recognize Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem. He toured the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, which by Christian tradition is where Jesus was crucified and the location of his tomb. He also said he appreciated Trump's visit to the Western Wall earlier in the day - the first stop at the Jewish holy site ever by a sitting USA commander in chief. The president and Kushner visited one side, while the first daughter and first lady visited a portion of the site reserved for women. The family was separated by gender.

For Jews, the Western Wall, a retaining wall from the biblical Jewish Temple, is revered as the holiest site where Jews can pray.

But now, antagonism toward Iran is injecting urgency into regional discussions and there is widespread optimism that some sort of upgrade to relations can take place under Trump.

Trump, who is Protestant, is the first USA president to have Jewish members of his immediate family.

The White House struggled to answer the question. Trump himself never commented. Israel and Sunni countries have become de facto allies in recent years, a trend accelerated by their shared suspicion of Obama's strategy to engage with Iran. He has taken a tougher line on settlements than Israeli officials had expected, urging restraint though not calling for a full halt to construction.
