White Supremacists Form Literal Mob with Torches

Richard Spencer - the white supremacist known for popularizing the term "alt-right", getting booted from CPAC, and being punched in the face during Donald Trump's inauguration - led protests in Charlottesville, Virginia on Saturday over the city's plan to remove a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.

Sunday night's rally was held in response to a rally Saturday night at a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.

After about ten minutes of activity, Charlottesville police intervened, and the crowd extinguished their torches and dispersed.

Speaking to The Guardian, Spencer said: "None of the Klan or the National Socialist Party has a monopoly on torches or the beauty of that spectacle of flames at night [.] No one has a monopoly on this aesthetic".

In a statement over the weekend, Charlottesville Mayor Mike Signer said the city would "reject this intimidation" calling Charlottesville a "a welcoming city".

When asked if he felt Confederate statues should be moved, he said that should be a local decision that follows Virginia law.

Wagner, R-Virginia Beach, both denounced the display that capped a day of white-pride events that featured white nationalist leader Richard Spencer, a prominent figure in the so-called alt-right, the loosely defined political movement built on the idea that white identity is under attack by liberal multiculturalism. Spencer said during the daytime protest.

In recent years, a string of US Southern states have moved Confederate-era monuments to museums, an effort that intensified after a white supremacist killed nine black people in a SC church in June 2015. On Sunday, he mocked a reporter who called out the event: "Glad you enjoyed it", he tweeted.

Over 100 people gathered at a local park in Virginia to protest the removal of Confederate-era statues by burning torches and shouting controversial chants.

The city council voted to sell off the 93-year-old monument and replace it with a new memorial dedicated to slaves.

This month, a Charlottesville judge blocked the city from selling the statue for at least six months as a legal challenge against the council's action proceeds.

"We won, you lost, little Tommy", Spencer replied.
