Protecting Windows-Based Computers From WannaCry Ransomware

This weekend's global online extortion attack reinforces the need for businesses and other large organizations to update their computer operating systems and security software, cybersecurity experts said.

Microsoft had released in March a patch to fix the flaw exploited this week, but many computers, particularly older systems or devices that hadn't been updated, remained vulnerable. Rather, it discovered weaknesses in various versions of Windows and wrote programs that would allow American spies to penetrate computers running Microsoft's operating system, and it was one of these programs, codenamed ETERNALBLUE and repurposed by still-unidentified hackers, that allowed WannaCry to spread as quickly and uncontrollably as it did last week.

As per Microsoft, on Friday the malware bout started and it has been related by some virus software company's researchers to earlier hits by a North Korean-run hacking process, controlled the instrument constructed by the National Security Agency that leaked in April month via the Internet. In the recent attack, which is considered one of the massive ransomware attacks, crackers were demanding $300 to $500 bitcoin for decrypting the file. The NSA's decision to stockpile vulnerabilities could have already contributed to thwarting other cyberattacks, but there is an easy solution to this problem - if the NSA had alerted Microsoft to the stolen vulnerability, Microsoft could have issued a security patch, as they did shortly after WannaCry spread internationally.

Some of the NSA's defenders are quick to blame computer owners and IT administrators for not keeping their software current, but less likely to blame Microsoft for writing insecure code, alienating customers with shoddy operating systems and planned obsolescence, or dropping support for older OSes still in wide use.

Lauded rocker Chris Cornell killed himself by hanging
Jane's Addiction's Dave Navarro said he was "so so stunned" to hear of Cornell's death, saying it was "such a awful and sad loss". All the friends that I had were still (messed) up with drugs and were people that I didn't really have anything in common with".

Firstly, we would like to mention the Windows versions that are by far and large under the assault of WannaCry. The most affected are America shipping companies and healthcare systems in the United Kingdom. WannaCry is believed to be using the same software.

The tools behind the attack originated within the NSA.

Spanish firm Telefonica, French automaker Renault, the US -based delivery service FedEx and the German railway Deutsche Bahn were among those affected.

He continued, "This ransomworm moves laterally inside the network and encrypts every PC and server, including the organization's backup". A new variant of the WannaCry attack surfaced on Monday, according to cybersecurity firm Check Point Software Technologies, but the firm stopped it by using the kill switch, Reuters reports.

Roger Ailes, former Fox News chief, dies
The caller also said the "fall was accidental" and Ailes was not "completely alert" or responding. Ailes went on to advise President Ronald Reagan in 1984 and then-Vice President George H.W.

"This attack provides yet another example of why the stockpiling of vulnerabilities by governments is such a problem", Microsoft President and Chief Legal Officer Brad Smith said in a blog post on Sunday, comparing the recent leaks of NSA and Central Intelligence Agency hacking tools to, in the real world, the theft of cruise missiles.

Britain's National Health Services first sounded the ransomware alarm Friday.

Keep your computer up to date. Even though Microsoft no longer provides updates for Windows XP, it is still widely used in Europe and Asia. The 22-year-old cyber security researcher has warned everyone to patch their systems before it's too late to escape the attack. Several security holes are fixed before they can be exploited.

Microsoft chief legal officer Brad Smith blamed the NSA's practice of developing hacking methods to use against the US Government's enemies for leaving gaping vulnerabilities.
