New York Times quotes Trump telling Russians Comey was a 'nut job'

President allegedly told Russians that firing "nut job" Comey relieved 'great pressure, ' while federal probe appears to get more serious.

The president has repeatedly denied any collusion between his campaign and Russian Federation, characterizing the multiple investigations of the matter as a "witch-hunt".

He says his memo is not a finding of official misconduct and is not a statement of reasons to justify Comey's firing. In the Oval Office weeks later, Comey told associates, the president asked him to shut down an investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Rosenstein said that he and Attorney General Jeff Sessions had "discussed the need for new leadership at the FBI" in one of their first meetings, and that he believed Comey had damaged the credibility of the bureau and the Justice Department through the Clinton case.

And insiders claimed conversations between Russian officials which were then picked up by intelligence agencies revealed they regarded Mr Flynn as an ally.

Trump also set a goal to use the visits as a way to signal that the United States is re-establishing its global leadership role while emphasising its allies' responsibility to share more of the burden of their own defense and to increase investment and partnerships that can create U.S. jobs, the official said.

Trump's meeting with ambassador Sergey Lavrov came just one day after he had fired Comey.

In a move aimed at restoring public faith in the Russian Federation investigation, Rosenstein this week appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to head the probe. "He was insane, a real nut job", the Times reported that Trump said during the May 10 meeting.

Reports have emerged that Mr Comey wrote a memo after a meeting with Mr Trump, where the US President was quoted as saying "I hope you can let this go".

White House spokesman Sean Spicer called the president's rhetoric part of his deal-making.

Trump doesn't plan to use Israel trip to announce embassy move
Staver, who will arrive in Israel the same day as the president, will lead a team of Christian college students from 30 schools as part of the Covenant Journey outreach.

"By grandstanding and politicizing the investigation into Russia's actions, James Comey created unnecessary pressure on our ability to engage and negotiate with Russia", Spicer said. "The investigation would have always continued, and obviously the termination of Comey would not have ended it".

The New York Times has reported that Trump asked Comey for his "loyalty" during a private dinner and requested he drop the investigation into Michael T. Flynn, his former national security adviser, who is under scrutiny regarding his ties to Russian Federation and Turkey. The report did not name the adviser. The notes were taken from inside the office and circulated "as the official account of the meeting".

On Friday, members of Congress said, Rosenstein clearly defined his role in Comey's dismissal, telling the assembly that while he had written a memo criticising Comey's flouting of Justice Department rules for his public revelation of aspects of the Hillary Clinton email probe, it was not intended as a justification for firing Comey.

Before the appointment of Mueller, House Democrats on Wednesday took procedural steps toward forcing a House vote to establish a separate, independent commission to conduct its own investigation, similar to the 9/11 commission.

Asked whether Trump might have to cut short his nine-day trip because of the latest controversies, a White House official said such a move was "doubtful".
