India's first womb transplant: Pune woman donates her womb to daughter

The frozen embryos are implanted in the womb after the transplantation so that the couple could conceive. The surgery was the first of its kind in India and was performed by a team of doctors at Pune's Galaxy Care Hospital in the city of Pune in south-west India. Women don't need a womb to survive.

A third womb transplant will take place at the GLCI at a later stage on a woman who is suffering from cervical cancer. Both the recipients and donor will be made to go through a screening before going through the procedure. Adoption is another great option, where you can give a child a loving home.

"The first case always takes time and in the case of this 21-year-old girl who was born without a uterus, we had to recreate the blood supply before fitting the womb that was donated by her 41-year-old mother", Dr Shailesh Puntambekar, whose team performed the tricky operation, told the Indian Express.

Since the nerves are not transplanted with the uterus, the mother-to-be does not feel the baby kicking in her womb.

Another risk is that women need to take immunosuppressant drugs so that their body does not reject the organ, which lowers immunity and increases the risk of infections, which can harm the baby in the womb.

Uterine transplant is a surgical procedure whereby a healthy uterus is harvested from a donor and transplanted into an organism of which the uterus is absent or diseased.

Alexis Sanchez frustrated by Arsenal's failure to challenge for the title
Wenger is out of contract at the end of this season and has yet to announce what his future holds beyond the summer. And though I modified that in the final article it didn't go down well.

"What is planned in Pune is a risky escapade of surgical cowboys wanting to be the first in their country and to get (worldwide) publicity and fame easy", Dr Mats Brännström, who led the world's first womb transplant in Sweden in 2012, told Hindustan Times.

The immediate success of the surgery could be assessed after sonography studies which would determine whether the transplanted uterus was getting regular blood flow and functioning normally.

The doctors also said they expect the recipient to menstruate normally, something which she has not experienced thus far.

Man who ran over pedestrians was 'hearing voices'
NY police said Rojas was arrested for driving under the influence in 2008 and 2015, and detained earlier this month for menacing. Rojas' mother was also brought in for questioning; she said nothing to reporters as detectives led her to a waiting auto .

Since womb transplantation is not lifesaving, the onus is on the surgeons to ensure the benefits to the women's mental health outweigh the physical risks.
