The "ransomware" cyberattack that has hit as many as 200,000 victims in over 150 countries should be treated by governments around the world as a "wake- up call", IT giant Microsoft has said.

The term ransomware refers to malicious software that infects or locks a computer, preventing access to files.

It comes after more than 200,000 victims in around 150 countries were infected by ransomware that originated in the United Kingdom and Spain before spreading around the world. The tools behind the cyber attack allegedly belonged to the US National Security Agency.

The computer malware has spread across 150 countries and takes over users' files with a demand of $300 to restore them.
