Ransomware WannaCry attack: Banks cautious, shut down ATMs operating on old software

As in other ransomware attacks, the invading software locked users out of their data and demanded a payment in exchange for the restoration of files.

More than 200,000 victims in at least 150 countries have been hit so far by the ransomware, which has netted the party responsible at least $49,000 in Bitcoin payments, according to recent news reports.

EternalBlue could compromise all versions of Windows through a networking bug in SMBv1, and is the attack the WannaCry ransomware used to infect machines. "We need governments to consider the damage to civilians that comes from hoarding these vulnerabilities and the use of these exploits".

These are important because ransomware not just ransoms the users' files but can also install banking Trojans to clean out the users' bank accounts, capturing the users' banking details when they log into their bank to pay the ransom.

The head of Microsoft has called on governments to stop stockpiling software vulnerabilities, after claiming that Friday's global cyber-attack exploited information stolen from the US National Security Agency. "It is deeply disturbing the National Security Agency likely wrote the original malware".

The company said users of its email service are also fully protected from WannaCry.

Lack Of Sleep Really Does Make You Less Attractive, Study Suggests

Some major technology companies, including Alphabet Inc's Google and Facebook Inc, declined comment on the Microsoft statement. As Paul Bond and Kimberly Chow's March 7, 2017, article in Corporate Counsel suggests, ransomware attacks in 2017 are similar to data security breaches a decade ago: a known risk, drawing class-action litigation, for which a plan is needed. So MalwareTech bought the domain name himself, hoping to use it to track WannaCry as it spread. But Darien Huss, a ProofPoint researcher in IN, confirmed that what MalwareTech had actually triggered was a "kill switch" that instructed WannaCry to stop spreading. He said people still using older systems should upgrade.

Although the origin of the code hasn't been officially confirmed, the release garnered enough attention to prompt Microsoft to issue a security patch for Windows XP, even though it had previously said it was no longer going to update the aging software.

"T$3 his attack demonstrates the degree to which cybersecurity has become a shared responsibility between tech companies and customers", Smith said in his blog post.

"There is simply no way for customers to protect themselves against threats unless they update their systems".
