Labour will do well to lose only 29 seats, says Unite leader

During an interview at a General Election campaign event in Derby, Mr McDonnell said the party's choice of seats to campaign in was not based on Labour candidates wanting to distance themselves from Mr Corbyn.

In a press conference with Chancellor Philip Hammond in London, Mrs May said ordinary people would "pay the price of Labour" in higher taxes, mortgage rates and unemployment at a time when the country was going through Brexit negotiations. Meanwhile, successive governments have missed their deficit targets.

Launching his blueprint for government, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn promised he would review "reforming council tax and business rates, and consider new options such as land value tax, to ensure local government has sustainable funding for the long-term".

However, Labour did not provide detailed costs for a plan to nationalise railways, the Royal Mail and parts of the energy industry.

Prime Minister May herself argued the Labour manifesto didn't "add up".

McCluskey said it was hard for the party to challenge now only two years after losing an election, and one year after Labour MPs attempted to replace Corbyn as leader - a move he said instilled the impression of a divided party in the minds of many voters.

Theresa May remains on course for a major victory on June 8, with the Conservatives unchanged on 49 per cent and Labour climbing from a rock-bottom 26 to 34 per cent.

However, the manifesto also pledges centralisation of social care, with plans for a National Care Service.

Ms Dugdale, the party's leader in Scotland, said she defined success as "winning the election".

He summed up Labour's plans for Britain as a "shambles".

She added: "I think he's wrong, I hope he's wrong".

The extra funding for adult social care would be spread across the next five years and would alleviate the current "crisis", the manifesto states.
