White House: Trump staffer's Western Wall comment does not reflect administration policy

According to the Times of Israel, Netanyahu's office was "shocked" by the comments and has asked the Trump administration about the incident. "It will convey a message that we are in Jerusalem to stay".

The Western Wall, the holiest site where Jews can pray, is located in east Jerusalem, which was occupied by Israel in 1967 and later annexed in a move never recognised by the global community.

Israeli ultra-Orthodox Jewish men participate in the Cohanim Priestly caste blessing during the Jewish holiday of Passover, in front of the Western Wall, the holiest site where Jews can pray in Jerusalem's old city, Monday, April 25, 2016. "It's part of the West Bank", Israeli television reported on Monday night.

American media outlets didn't pick up on the story immediately, but the Associated Press did note the "spat" this afternoon, as well as the "astonishment" from an official in Netanyahu's office over the remarks. The former USA administration of Barack Obama was deeply opposed to Israel's expansion of the settlements and in December withheld its veto from a U.N. Security Council resolution condemning the policy. Friedman, who owns an apartment in Jerusalem, is expected to live in the USA ambassador's official residence in the Tel Aviv suburb of Herziliya.

The current CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, Jonathan Greenblatt, urged the White House to clarify its stance following the report.

This allegedly led to an outright shouting match between the two parties, with the Israelis maintaining that the Western Wall was "territory holy to Israel".

"The claims by a Fox News correspondent are false", Mr Netanyahu's office said.

"The sources say the Las Vegas billionaire doesn't buy the argument that the embassy move should be contingent on the peace process".

Both issues provoked criticism of Trump's White House in Israel as preparations intensified for his visit to the country and the Palestinian territories on May 22 and 23.

Netanyahu on Monday called again on Trump to move the embassy to Jerusalem, on the same day that his controversial Israel envoy pick David Friedman arrives in Israel to begin his tenure.

The status of Jerusalem remains one of the core issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. "This is a core value of national identity for Israelis which may not be fully appreciated by the outside world".

"We are convinced that this statement is contrary to the policy of President Trump".

Miley Cyrus regrets Wrecking Ball video
She recalled, "When she came out with " I Kissed a Girl , ' I was doing the 'Hannah Montana" movie, and I heard her on the radio. The whole story is nice and all , but it contradicts Katy's previous claims about her breakout single " I Kissed a Girl ".

Bennett said he was not sure why Trump has changed his rhetoric. "I am very disappointed he hasn't moved the embassy", Klein told Jewish Insider in a phone interview.

It's unclear whether Tillerson is reflecting the viewpoint of the president, or simply discussing how he sees the embassy move in the grand scheme of his vision for the Middle East.

"The President is getting bad advice from some of his aides", Klein continued. And lo, to appease his furthest-right, ultanationalist coalition partner, Netanyahu hastened to declare that moving the embassy would be beneficial to peace.

Moving the embassy to Jerusalem would not only keep an unequivocal campaign promise but would also be in line with USA law, which three successive administrations have chosen not to observe over the past 18 years, by passing six-monthly national security waivers.

Since taking office, Trump has backed away from his campaign pledge to move the embassy in a gesture to Israel, instead saying he's still studying the issue.
