The global ransomware attack is far from over

India's cyber security unit CERT-In said on Monday that it has not received any formal report of cyberattack on India's vital networks by the crippling global ransomware, "WannaCry", a claim that was corroborated by the central government.

The software tools to create the attack were revealed in April among a trove of NSA spy tools that were either leaked or stolen.

Ryan Kalember, senior vice president at Proofpoint Inc. which helped stop its spread, said the version without a kill switch could spread.

Currently, an estimated 200,000 victims in 150 different countries are reported to have been hit by the cyberattack. "There is an urgent need to get to the bottom of how this happened and who is responsible".

Renault halted production at some factories to stop the virus from spreading, a spokesman said Saturday, while Nissan's United Kingdom vehicle plant in Sunderland, in northeast England, was affected without causing any major impact on business, an official said.

Deutsche Bahn: The German railway company told CNNMoney that due to the attack "passenger information displays in some stations were inoperative" as were "some ticket machines". "But remember that a breach anywhere in the system - like an outdated ATM OS - can lead to breaches in the servers, bank systems and compromise of customer data", said an executive with ATM maker NCR.

The attack was made possible by a flaw in Microsoft's Windows software that the NSA used to build a hacking tool for its own use - only to have that tool and others end up in the hands of a mysterious group called the Shadow Brokers, which then published them online. The first tries to exploit the SMB vulnerability on other computers on the network, and the second is the WannaCrypt ransomware itself. The company said the virus has been localized and "technical work is underway to destroy it and update the antivirus protection".

Megafon: A spokesperson for Russian telecommunications company Megafon told CNN that the cyberattack affected call centers but not the company's networks.

At a time when hyper-targeted phishing attacks and sophisticated government-sponsored assaults represent the cutting edge of the battle over cyber security, the spread of the WannaCry ransomware looks like a blast from the past. He said the situation was under control. "At this stage, we do not have any evidence that patient data has been accessed". The NHS has said hospitals have had to cancel some outpatient appointments because of the attack.

The government held an emergency meeting Saturday of its crisis response committee, known as COBRA, to assess the damage.

In India, the attack affected Andhra Pradesh Police, four manufacturing companies, two retailers, to banks, the operations of a multinational corporations and the Chennai automation facility.

The 5,500-strong Renault factory in Douai, northern France, one of the most important auto plants in the country, will not open on Monday due to the attack, sources told AFP. "Our cybercrime teams are now working to retrieve lost data", Joshua said.
