Beware: Worldwide Ransomware Attack May Be Far from Over

Sophisticated ransomware usually has an automated way to accept payments from victims who want to unlock their computers. Microsoft is pointing the finger at the USA government, while some experts say the software giant is accountable too.The attack started Friday and has affected computers in more than 150 countries, including severe disruptions at Britain's National Health Service. Though some 5 to 10 percent of computers worldwide still rely on Windows XP, Microsoft no longer provides updates to the operating system. You can attempt to pay the roughly $300 ransom using Bitcoin, but there's no guarantee you'll get your files back. In March, thousands of leaked Central Intelligence Agency documents exposed vulnerabilities in smartphones, televisions and software built by Apple, Google and Samsung Electronics.

Alex Abdo, a staff attorney at the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, said Microsoft and other software companies have strategically settled lawsuits that could lead to court rulings weakening their licensing agreements.

"There are other criminals who've launched this attack, and they are ultimately responsible for this", he said.

"WannaCry is just the tip of the iceberg and organisations need to re-assess the security programme and strengthen detection, prevention and response capabilities to counter such attacks", Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India Partner Shree Parthasarathy said. "When a design flaw is discovered in a auto, manufacturers issue a recall".

Using antivirus software will at least protect you from the most basic, well-known viruses by scanning your system against the known fingerprints of these pests.

The good news - in addition to Microsoft's prompt patching for older OSs - is that shortly after WannaCry started making trouble on Friday, a security researcher in the United Kingdom known by the moniker MalwareTech stumbled upon a crucial piece of data in the malware's code.

Microsoft has taken further step to patch Windows XP systems first. Many organizations without updated backups may decide that regaining access to critical files, such as customer data, and avoiding public embarrassment is worth the cost. A successful cyber-attack on the banking system, the electric grid, traffic lights or electronic medical records could do far more economic and security damage.

Still, administrators should patch such machines, the company warned.

Trump does not think U.S. should copy Australia's health system: White House
Trump regaled the crowd with stories about how he agreed to give the Fox News owner cash for a US-Australia charity. White House officials said the US-Australia refugee deal still stood, but remained a "raw nerve" for Mr Trump.

In addition, it's important to run antivirus or other security software, and keep a separate backup of all your important data, so that if your PC does get hijacked by ransomware, your personal files aren't at risk.

"They're going to end up going above and beyond and some vendors are going to start extending support for out-of-support things that they haven't done before", said Greg Young, an analyst at market research firm Gartner Inc.

The most basic precaution is one everyone knows but not everyone puts into practice: Back everything up.

WannaCry has renewed a debate about the obligations of defense departments to the private sector. Once malicious software is in the wild, it is commonly reused by hacking groups, especially nation-states trying to leave the fingerprints of another country.

India to tour West Indies right after Champions Trophy
The ICC normally does not have a say on bilateral series as it is a bi-partite agreement between the two cricket boards. India s cricket board dropped a $42 million damages claim against the West Indies over an abandoned tour in 2014.

Microsoft itself is unlikely to face legal trouble over the flaw in Windows being exploited by WannaCry, according to legal experts. Some security researchers speculated that if the perpetrators were North Korean, the goal may have been to cause a widespread internet outage to coincide with this weekend's latest missile test. Most importantly, such a convention would commit governments to turning over software vulnerabilities when they find them - rather than exploiting them to break into enemy computers - so that companies can patch them. Brad Smith, Microsoft's top lawyer, criticized USA intelligence agencies for "stockpiling" software code that can be used by hackers. In the same way, flawless online security is not possible, but most enterprises - especially those that are smaller and do not carry a high profile - can take measures to make themselves less inviting targets and to keep their data relatively safe. The city of Osaka said its home page went blank, although problems had not been detected otherwise.
