World wide cyber attack strikes several countries after hitting UK's health service

Microsoft rolled out a patch for the vulnerability in March, but hackers apparently took advantage of the fact that vulnerable targets - particularly hospitals - had yet to update their systems or had ignored advisories from Microsoft to do so.

A British medical student found widespread computer issues when visiting two London hospitals.

An global cyber attack on Friday, May 12, struck countries including the United Kingdom and Spain, British Prime Minister Theresa May said, as security experts warned it could affect many other countries.

It was believed to the biggest attack of its kind ever recorded.

FedEx appears to be the first USA -based target, though Kalember said he is aware of others who have not spoken publicly.

The computers all appeared to be hit with the same ransomware, and similar ransom messages demanding about $300 to unlock their data, The New York Times reports.

Mrs May said: "The National Cyber Security Centre is working closely with NHS to ensure that they support the organisations concerned and that they protect patient safety".

Kurt Baumgartner, principal security researcher at Kaspersky, says the malware has translations in dozens of languages, such that instructions for paying the ransom are displayed in the language set for that computer.

Earlier, Kaspersky researcher Costin Raiu cited 45,000 attacks in 74 countries, saying that the malware, a self-replicating "worm", was spreading quickly.

Still, only a small number of US-headquartered organizations were hit because the hackers appear to have begun the campaign by targeting organizations in Europe, said Vikram Thakur, research manager with security software maker Symantec.

The tool used in the attack was made available by the group codenamed Shadowbrokers on April 14. In addition to Russian Federation, the biggest targets appeared to be Ukraine and India, nations where it is common to find older, unpatched versions of Windows in use, according to the security firm.

There's no evidence so far that patient records have been accessed, nor does it appear the NHS was purposefully targeted.

Microsoft said its engineers had added detection and protection against the ransomware attack.

British Prime Minister Theresa May said there was no evidence that patient data had been compromised in the attack, and that it had not specifically targeted the National Health Service.

"It's an worldwide attack and a number of countries and organisations have been affected", she said.

Publicly identifying attacks was also risky, because many organisations were reluctant to disclose vulnerability.

Organizations across the world are suffering under the attack as universities, telecommunications and utility services, banks, and hospitals are affected.

Thousands of businesses in Spain have also been hit.

Several companies in Spain were also crippled by ransomware attacks. "No computers are now working", they said, speaking on condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to speak to press. Phone systems, X-ray services and patient administration systems have been affected, while 1 doctor in eastern England reported all cancer treatments had been suspended in his area.
