Still no verdict for Florida ex-congresswoman's fraud trial

Still no verdict for Florida ex-congresswoman's fraud trial

Defense attorney James Smith expressed concern that this was an indication the juror could be discussing the case outside the deliberation room.

Federal prosecutor Eric G. Olshan outlined the highlights of the case against Brown during a presentation that took more than an hour Monday morning.

Judge Timothy Corrigan called the jury out of their room a little before 5pm to send them home for the day.

She was convicted of 18 of the 22 federal fraud charges against her, including lying on her taxes and on her congressional financial disclosure forms. Brown was found not guilty on counts 3, 5, 14, and 16. So, of course, Simmons and the charity's president testified against her.

Brown was well known in Jacksonville for being outspoken on behalf of her city, minorities, and the poor.

Today the Surface Laptop joins the family, and Microsoft wants this to be a full out laptop designed for the college student. The Windows 10 S version will retail for $299 (roughly Rs. 19,200), and is available in select stores right away.

If Brown is convicted on all counts, she faces 357 years in prison and $5 million in fines. Meanwhile, they said, the charity gave out just one scholarship, worth $1,200, in the span of those four years.

In Bono's Barbeque on Norwood Avenue where in January 2016 federal agents served Brown with an initial subpoena for documents, restaurant regulars say the verdict comes as a blow. "These are the actions of someone who knows 'I've been caught'".

Brown, who was one of the first three African Americans to be elected to Congress from Florida since Reconstruction, represented the district that included Jacksonville since 1993.

While facing the indictment Brown ran for re-election, but was defeated in her primary past year. She said she should have paid more attention and been involved with the dealings of her professional and personal finances.

According to WJXT-TV, Brown used at least $300,000 to pay for lavish receptions, box seats at sporting events and concerts, and trips for her and her aides.

Brown, who represented parts of north and central Florida until leaving office in January, had pleaded not guilty all charges. Former U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown, third from left, leaves the courthouse on Thursday, May 11, 2017, in Jacksonville, Fla., after being found of taking money from a charity that was purported to be giving scholar.

Under cross-examination, Simmons admitted that he lied for years about One Door, that he lied to the FBI when investigators came to question him about it and that he lied to Brown's defense attorney when the attorney, at one point, was going to represent him along with Brown.

Simmons said he had to be overly cooperative with the government to get a reduced sentence for his own crimes.

Brown released a statement through her attorney saying that she "maintains her innocence" and intends to "file a motion for a new trial". I ask that you continue to pray for and support me. He would often keep some for himself. Brown flatly denied that Friday.

"She exercised total control". At one point she broke down crying and the jury had to be ushered from the room while she composed herself after crying out "they're trying to destroy my life" during cross-examination.
