Trump was looking to fire Comey from day one: White House

Even before the furor over the firing of Comey, the Republican president's popularity was already dropping.

But the Washington Post presented a very different perspective on the deputy attorney general's role in Comey's firing, reporting, "Rosenstein threatened to resign after the narrative emerging from the White House on Tuesday evening cast him as a prime mover of the decision to fire Comey and that the president acted only on his recommendation".

While the public explanation for the firing contained in Rosenstein's memo was that Comey had mishandled the conclusion of the Hillary Clinton e-mail investigation, reports are emerging that Trump had been angry with Comey over a number of issues, including Comey's pursuit of the Russian Federation investigation and his seeming disinterest in pursuing media leaks. This, while Rosenstein was asked by Trump to write a document assessing Comey's conduct in the Hillary Clinton investigation, but did not explicitly recommend the president to fire the FBI director. "That's a question I would have to refer you to the Department of Justice".

"It is done and I will be fine, although I will miss you and the mission deeply".

Democrats compared Mr Comey's removal to President Richard Nixon's "Saturday night massacre" during the Watergate investigation and renewed calls for the appointment of a special prosecutor.

Sally Yates Was the Real Blackmailer
Clapper acknowledged Monday that he was "not aware of the counterintelligence investigation" the FBI was conducting on the matter. After those skeptical questions, Trump took no visible action against Flynn until a public outcry forced him to.

Trump's team belatedly scrambled to try to contain the fallout from Tuesday's stunning termination that some of them said they did not expect to cause such an uproar.

"We don't think it's necessary", said White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

Analysts and former agents say Comey's exit gives the Federal Bureau of Investigation [FBI] much-needed space to get past accusations that he botched the probe into Hillary Clinton's email server previous year, helping swing the election to Trump.

But critics say the 52-year-old Harvard graduate, with a reputation as straight-shooting and non-partisan, has been sucked into providing cover for Mr Trump to push out a man he desperately wanted rid of.

Trump's startling sacking of Comey triggered a political firestorm in Washington and plunged his 100-day-odd presidency into turmoil with strong opposition to his move by the Democrats.

Before he was sacked, Comey was investigating whether the Trump campaign had colluded with Russian officials to influence the 2016 US presidential election. Nixon actually ordered the firing of independent special prosecutor Archibald Cox, which led to the resignations of his attorney general and deputy attorney general.

The president had made the Comey-related remark during a meeting with former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger in the Oval Office.

Comey's firing Tuesday shocked many in Washington and came as he was reportedly expanding the score of the FBI's probe into possible election ties between Russian Federation and Trump's team. "He wasn't doing a good job".

Trump, however, did not respond to a question about whether the new FBI Director would be in charge of the investigation into Russia's contacts with his election campaign.

In his brief letter to Mr Comey, Mr Trump said the sacking was necessary to restore "public trust and confidence" in the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
