Moon Jae-in claims victory in South Korea presidential election

Two months after booting their sitting presiden.

National elections are public holidays in South Korea and preliminary figures showed a turnout of 77.2 percent - the highest for 20 years in a presidential poll.

Moon decisively won South Korea's presidential election on Tuesday, ending almost a decade of conservative rule and bringing a more conciliatory approach toward Pyongyang.

Conservatives worry that a victory by the liberal, Moon Jae-in, might benefit North Korea and estrange South Korea and its most important ally, the United States. At home, Moon is expected to tackle festering social, political and economic anger.

"I will quickly move to solve the crisis in national security". I will go to Beijing and I will go to Tokyo.

He said he is willing to visit North Korea's capital Pyongyang under the right conditions.

The winning candidate in the election overnight will be officially sworn in as South Korea's new president after the election commission finishes the vote count and declares the victor at midday.

South Korean residents will be seen heading to polls on Tuesday, 9th May to vote for a successor to President Park Geun-Hye and the one who will be leading the nation next.

Death Wipes Hernandez of His Murder Conviction
Lawyers for Hernandez had argued that the SJC had applied the legal doctrine "without exception", even in cases of suicide. Three notes were found and prosecutors allege that they prove Hernandez killed himself to vacate his conviction.

Mr. Moon promised to implement a "National Interest First" policy.

The president-elect said his victory came from the "desperation of the people for a new government". To his rivals, Moon said, "We are partners who must lead a new Republic of Korea. We must put the days of fierce competition behind and hold hands marching forward".

Taking up his role as the new commander in chief, Moon received a call from Army Gen.

North Korea denounced the move as an act of aggression and threatened military action against the US if provoked.

Lawmakers must approve Lee for the country's No. 2 job, which was largely a ceremonial post before Park's removal made current Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn a government caretaker.

The leaders of China and Japan sent their congratulations.

The dispute has sparked retaliation against South Korean businesses in China, where South Korean consumer goods and cultural products are hugely popular, along with the canceling of Chinese group tours to South Korea.

Moon told reporters after casting his ballot he had "given the campaign his all", and urged South Koreans to vote.

Mr Moon, 64, was the clear favourite as conservative forces struggled to regroup after the scandal ended Ms Park's presidency.

There will be no traditional two month transition period because it was a by-election to replace Park.

Park's single five-year term was set to end this coming December, but her December 2016 impeachment - upheld by the Korean Constitutional Court on March 10 - cut her term short.

Moon has promoted engagement with the north.

Conservative Hong Joon-pyo -who dubs Moon a "pro-Pyongyang leftist" - was far behind on 23.3 percent, with centrist Ahn Cheol-soo third on 21.8.

The conservative Hong had pitched himself as a "strongman", described the election as a war between ideologies and questioned Moon's patriotism. Park was thrown out of office on charges of bribery and abuse of power. Park is now in jail awaiting trial on 18 charges, including bribery, over allegations that she took money from billionaire Samsung scion Lee Jae-yong in an effort by Lee to facilitate a major business transaction.
